Give 2 ideas each that you learned from the Resource Persons and give a short
explanation. ( 20 points total; 54 pts for every idea)
a) Datu Waway Saway of Talaandig Tribe
A.1 I have learned from the resource speaker that every individual can
show off their art works whether you belong to the indigenous groups or not.
Which means that you have the right to do whatever type of arts you want to
create (music, soil painting, handicrafts, etc). The important thing to remember is
that, the artist must know what is the inspiration behind the art piece and know its
history as a form of respect and recognition to the real and original indigenous
artists (Datu Wayay Linsahay Saway).
A.2 Art and music help the artists to escape from reality by focusing on
their work and indigenous art is also a form of healing because it helps a person to
appreciate nature and the inspiration behind every art piece. Different indigenous
artists also suffer economically, so for the purpose of surviving real life
situations/problems especially during this Covid-19 pandemic art helps them as
their sales continue.
b) Erlow Talatala
B.1 The resource speaker said that the local artist and art community was
really affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but everyone was able to go back because
of art. Art helps him as an artist to deal with life, especially for the provision of
their daily needs for the survival of the artist and its family. We must remember
that indigenous art can also be a career that helps us live.
B.2 A simple dot is also an art as long as there is a concept on it. It’s
important to do a deep discernment, not to be dictated on what the society
expects from you as an artist and that there must be no limitation in doing
different types of arts. As what Mr. Erlow Talatala said, the creation of art must
first start from understanding what is your place/ the genre of your music/ theme
of your artwork, reasonable price of the art and the product. As an artist, we need
to offer a unique product that expresses our own imagination, creativity, and
outlook for the future world.
2. What do you think of indigenous art ? What do you feel when you see their
artworks? What skills do our IPs possess ? ( 10)
Indigenous arts is a helpful tool in promoting the culture, practices, and life
of the indigenous people. There is no limitation when making an art piece whether
its music, a painting, or crafts. Indigenous arts must be shown to the world
because art is also a way of preserving the culture of a certain place. Since art
pieces are a result of the artist's creativity, imagination and emotions, it makes me
realize how smart the people and the artists are. It serves as a visual evidence of
how rich the environment is and it just feels amazing whenever I see an artwork,
especially when I know the story behind it. Indigenous peoples possess different
skills in making different types of art such as soil painting, music, and handicrafts.
They have the skills in understanding what is their place, price and product that
must be shown to the audience. IP’s also have the capacity and the full potential to
be known internationally because they are smart and creative in transforming
what's inside the nature into the various forms of arts.

3. How can indigenous art be shown to the world, in light of globalization ? Is it

beneficial to showcase indigenous art masterpieces to the world ? ( 10)
Indigenous arts can be shown to the world through social media platforms
and through art exhibits because it allows the people to be aware of how creative
the indigenous people are. Art exhibitions are one of the many ways that represent
a way of displaying and contextualizing work of art that makes it relevant and
accessible to contemporary audiences. It allows the audiences to recognize the
artist, know the story and inspiration behind the art piece, and it allows the viewer
to critique the artwork with their set standard. Indigenous arts is the greatest
cultural gift to the world, and showcasing it is beneficial for the artist to go
internationally and be recognized as an artist from an indigenous community. It is
important to promote every indigenous art piece because it provides a means of
cultural expression and is a vehicle for the maintenance, transmission, and
preservation of culture.
