1 Description
With some minor modifications on the Wärtsilä IAS and one of the client computers it is
possible to integrate the CBM and PCMS functionality with the Wärtsilä Integrated
Automation System - WIAS.

1.1 CBM
The standalone CBM reads data directly from the engines, displays it on a separate
HMI, and send data to the CBM centre in Finland. The same data is by default
available in the Wärtsilä IAS.

1.2 PCMS
The standalone PCMS software is a separate HMI. It collects measurements relevant
to main propulsion, and some navigational data.
The PCMS includes installation of two PLC’s, and sensors. The two PLC’s gathers
measurements, and do some calculations which is sent by the HMI to the PCMS
centre. Some of these data are also available in the Wärtsilä IAS.

2 Integrating CBM and PCMS with WIAS

When integrating the CBM and PCMS with the WIAS, there is no need for adding new
HMI’s or additional computer screens.

For the CBM, a Wärtsilä Norway developed software will be installed on the WIAS
Client in the ECR, and it will run in the background. This software will read trends from
the WIAS Trend Server, and forward these to the CBM centre. The list of trends to be
sent to the CBM centre is configurable with CSV files. The trends will be reported as
XML files, and the frequency of the reporting is configurable.

A software called Advisory Manager, developed by the PCMS department, will be

installed on the WIAS Client. This software is an HMI for the PCMS. The software will
be available through the WIAS for the crew. The Advisory Manager reads data from the
two PCMS PLC’s and displays trends.
The two PLC’s will read all propulsion related data that is available in the WIAS from
two WIAS PLC’s, and use the data to make reports for the PCMS centre. These reports
will be sent through the Advisory Manager.

2.1 Reporting
A spare network card in the WIAS Client, in the ECR, makes it possible to report back
the CBM and PCMS data analysis centres. The spare network card will be connected
to the ship e-mail server, and use a ship e-mail address, for example
chiefengineer@example.com, to send the reports.

2.2 Network Security

To ensure network integrity and separate the networks on board, a firewall will be
installed to separate the Wärtsilä Network and the Ship Network. This firewall will only
allow communication on SMTP, (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), between the Wärtsilä
Client computer and the Ship Network router.
See Figure 1, for further clarification.

3 System Topology
In Figure 1, the reader can see the topology of the system.
As one can see in the Topology the Customer is responsible for providing a network
cable between the firewall and the Ship Network Internet Router.
