Career Development
Introduction
Career development — managing the next steps in your career, setting both
short- and long-term goals, getting the training you need to master new skills
and abilities, working with a career coach to help you do it, all with the goal of
moving up the ladder — is a vital, yet sometimes overlooked.
Learning Insights
Career development is a series of activities developing one’s career which
includes defining new goals regularly and acquiring skills to achieve them. It
involves training on new skills, moving to higher job responsibilities, making a
career change within the same organization, moving to a different
organization or starting one’s own business. There are 5 steps of career
development, they are self assessment, career awareness, goal setting, skill
training, and performing. The importance of career development is it provides
the framework with skills, goals, awareness, assessment and performance
which helps an individual to move in the right direction and achieve the goals
one has in one’s career.
Summary
You need to develop your career in order to grow. Career development is
achieved by building skills in the short term. Learning a hard skill like
programming, or a soft skill like effective listening, could all be a part of your
career development plan.
