Reading
1 Read the article about an international schools’ project.
The framework for the project is based on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals programme, which
encourages active change on 17 global issues, including ones such as ‘No poverty’ and ‘Gender Equality’. For
educators, the Innovation Project’s main benefit, but also challenge, is the opportunity to adopt a more flexible
teaching method where they guide students as a coach rather than acting as an instructor. The emphasis on active
student involvement means that learners brainstorm ideas related to a particular goal, discuss the best ideas,
create content and then share it with a wider audience.
The project is spread over four weeks. The first week centres around defining exactly what innovation is. The
second focuses on a specific sustainable goal that students want to tackle, leading to ideas on which solutions
might work in their own country as well as possible prototypes. In the following week, students focus on how to
use ICT (information and communications technology) in an innovative way. They then create tutorials explaining
how a particular ICT tool (for example, an app) can be exploited by other students. In the final week, students use
this new knowledge to present their chosen innovation and any prototypes they have created. The presentations
are uploaded onto the website, where students receive feedback from both other students and experts.
The initial project stages are important because students need to collaborate and research with their own
classmates. They watch videos created by other participants around the world and then have Skype calls with
these students to ask for advice about their own videos. Learning becomes fun for the students as they are
allowed to be creative and are fully involved in the process right from the beginning. Above all, they are given a
global platform in which to exchange ideas and feedback with other students worldwide.
Students have varying degrees of technology at their disposal, but the main aim is to make meaningful
connections with each other. The end product so far consists of over 100 different types of innovation, all made
available via online presentations, and many of these have brought about simple but genuine change. Following a
Skype call together, a group of American students collaborated with students in Malawi to set up a project to grow
food using 90% less water; a group of Guatemalan students worked out a new water recycling system, while Indian
students found ways to make sea water drinkable. Another interesting idea was the ‘Life Bag’, invented by a group
of Canadian students to help people in financial difficulty. It is a backpack that is delivered every month and
contains basic necessities such as clothing, water and a blanket.
Although teachers admitted there was quite a lot of work involved, many reported that students were simply
amazed by how many people around the world were sharing ideas with them. Teachers were also impressed by
how willing students were to take responsibility for their own projects, with one mentioning that some of her
students were working hard on the project during their days off.
