Immaculate is a sci-fi horror set five years into the future about Mary, a 19-year-old who is mysteriously

pregnant after the earth inexplicably loses 11 hours and six minutes (666 minutes). She wants to find out
the truth but has to contend with media scrutiny, shadowy figures tracking her and worship by a newly
formed second coming religious cult.
I wanted to explore the notion of stealth alien impregnation, while also dealing with issues around how
government, media and organised religion treat the role of women and motherhood.

INT. PLANE COCKPIT - NIGHT

The cockpit of a commercial plane, control panel lit up in
the dark. A clock shows it's 20:20.
The plane is cruising on autopilot.
The PILOT and FIRST OFFICER are relaxed, chatting and
drinking coffee.

PILOT
I honestly don't know how you got
away with that one. The dog? I
would not have bought that!
They both laugh.
Suddenly the cockpit is filled with light from the sun
seeping across the horizon. The clock now says 07:26
FIRST OFFICER
What the fuck? What just happened
there?
O.S - the rising sound of passengers panicking.
PILOT
I-I don't know. That did just
happen right? One minute it was
dark and now. How can? We're still
over Virginia. How on earth? Get
control now!

EXT. BEACH PARTY - NIGHT

A beach in Virginia. Plane lights blink in the sky above a
party of around 25 late teenagers.
A fire is going. Cheesy 80s pop plays. People dance or sit
drinking and talking.
MARY, 19, more striking than pretty, tall, dark hair, olive-
skinned and casually dressed is sitting with her friend LISA
and a BOY on a blanket.
MARY
Lis, how much have you had to drink
already? It's not even half 8.
She laughs and turns to the boy.

MARY (CONT'D)
What did you say your name was
again?
Suddenly the beach is lit by the sun rising over the sea. A
plane still hangs in the sky. Wham continues to play over the
sound of partygoers panicking.
Mary and Lisa are still on the blanket but the boy is gone.
Lisa still looks drunk but now in complete shock.
MARY (CONT'D)
What the fuck Lisa? What just
happened? Did that just happen?
Mary gets up. Cheesy pop continues playing with sounds of
shouting and panic.
SMASH CUT TO:
OVER BLACK: Cheesy pop and the sound of panicking continue.

INT. CLINIC RECEPTION - DAY

A dismal waiting room. An ANCHOR reads the news on a TV
screen mounted on the wall.

ANCHOR (ON TV)

Experts still don't know what
happened on 1 November. All we are
sure of is that time appeared to
jump forward for over 11 hours
while earth stood still. Physicists
are investigating how this was
possible. Meanwhile everyone is
urged to come forward with any
information or if they see anything
remotely unusual...
Mary, sitting tensely opposite, stares at the screen. She's
on her own on one of the benches lined up below dirty
windows. The voice of a RECEPTIONIST interrupts her watching.
RECEPTIONIST
Marie Smith?
MARY
It's Mary.
3.

She pushes past the receptionist.

INT. ULTRASOUND SCANNING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Mary is lying down in a darkened room. Thick gel is being
applied to her stomach. She flinches. Equipment bleeps.
TECHNICIAN
Sorry, the gel is a little cold.
So I understand you've not been
having periods? And you've had
cramps and stomach ache?
MARY
Yes, for a few weeks now.
TECHNICIAN
Have you taken a pregnancy test?
MARY
No.
TECHNICIAN
Because contraception can fail of
course.
MARY
There's no chance I'm pregnant.
TECHNICIAN
Ok, well let's see what we can
find.
The technician, smiling professionally, starts to press the
scanner against Mary's stomach. She looks up at the scan
screen as a picture starts to take shape.
TECHNICIAN (CONT'D)
So how have you been coping with
all this... weirdness?
Mary sighs and blinks. She's not smiling.
MARY
Ok, I guess.
Mary cranes her neck to see what's on the screen but the
technician is angling it away so she can't see. Confusion and
concern are on the technician's face.
MARY (CONT'D)
Is everything ok?
4.

TECHNICIAN
Er, yes, yes, I'm er just going to
have my supervisor look at this.
She gets up and is just about to leave the room when she
quickly comes back to turn the screen off.
Mary is left stomach still exposed and covered with gel, on
the bed. She cranes her neck again but can't see the screen.
OS: whispering outside the door.
An overly smiley supervisor comes in, followed by the first
technician.
SUPERVISOR
Hi there Mary, and how are you? How
have you been coping?
MARY
What's wrong?
SUPERVISOR
Nothing, nothing at all, we're just
going to have a double check of
what we can see on your scan.
That's all.
The supervisor runs the scanner over Mary's stomach. Her
smile fades as she stares at the screen, slowly puts the
scanner down and looks over at the first technician.
SUPERVISOR (CONT'D)
Mary, are you sure you can't be
pregnant?
MARY
I've already said, there's no
chance.
SUPERVISOR
Because contraception can fail.
MARY
There is absolutely no chance I'm
pregnant.
SUPERVISOR
Ok.
She looks at Mary with concern.
SUPERVISOR (CONT'D)
And are you here with anyone?
5.

MARY
No, I didn't think I'd need to be!
What is it? Is it cancer?
SUPERVISOR
No Mary. The scan. Well it does
show... Well, it shows that you are
actually expecting a baby. The
fetus is around 12 weeks old, which
by my calculations would make
conception around the end of
October or start of November.
As I said, contraception can...
MARY
Look, I'm sorry to have to keep
saying this, but it's impossible. I
cannot be pregnant. Is that scan
just an old leftover one, or I
dunno, from some other room and the
channel has crossed. Could you just
double check that please? Please?
SUPERVISOR
Sorry Mary you're our only patient
so far today. I understand this is
a shock. We can refer you to
counselling services and of course
you'll be supported in whatever
decision you make, everything going
on now shouldn't affect that.
Although at 12 weeks you'd need to
think quite quickly about...
MARY
But it literally can't be this.
Look, can I please just see what's
on that screen?
She fights back tears. The supervisor, looking at the
technician, slowly turns the screen back towards Mary.

INT. CLINIC RECEPTION - MOMENTS LATER

Mary, looking shocked, is putting on her coat while the
junior technician hands her some leaflets. She mumbles and
leaves.
The technician and supervisor watch Mary go, before turning
to talk to one another inaudibly, shrug and get on with their
day.
