Address Classes

Classes A, B, and C are used for Unicast traffics.


A. Class A Address
Range: 1.0.0.0 to 126.255.255.255
Network 0 (0.1.1.1) is reserved for default network
Network 127 (127.0.0.1) is reserved for loopback
Network and Host Portions: The First 8 bits denotes the network, the next 24 bits
denotes the Host.

B. Class B Addresses
Range: 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.255.255
Network and Host Portions: The First 16 bits denotes the network, the next 16 bits
denotes the Host.

C. Class C Addresses
Range: 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255
Network and Host Portions: The First 24 bits denotes the network, the next 8 bits
denotes the Host.

D. Class D Addresses
Used for multicast traffics.
Multicast implies that one device is talking to a group of devices, rather than one
device talking to one device.
Range: 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255
224.0.0.x are known as Link Local Multicasts
OSPF Routing Protocol uses 224.0.0.5 and 224.0.0.6

E. Class E Addresses
Reserved addresses for testing and other purposes.
Range: 240.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
