Lesson
Manage Personal Change
1 Towards Self-Appreciation
As a learner, Change is a necessary part of life. Without change there would be no
life at all. Our lives are actually fuelled by change; through most of us want an
certain amount stability. If you can learn to accept change as a helpful friend
rather something to be avoided, you may experience less stress.
Just like butterflies, humans also undergo metamorphosis. The caterpillar is like
the childhood stage wherein our physical bodies are nurtured, and our mental and
moral foundations are conditioned. This prepares the child for later years.
Adolescence, on the other hand, can be compared to the cocoon stage of the
butterfly or from a seed to a tree. It is transitional stage from childhood to
adulthood. It is stage in human development where there are significant physical,
behavioural and emotional in an individual. It is a period where a person is still
searching for his /her identity, a period where undergoes self-discovery. It is a
period, according to Rudolf Steiner, where the child begins to search for truths
about the world and he /she begins to experience the power of his/her own
thinking (Mitchelle, 2006)
At your age, you begin to form different types of relationships outside the home,
and many of your relationships will become more deeply involved and more
emotionally intimate. Your social networks may greatly expand to include many
more people, and may different types of relationships. This module was designed
and written to help you learners, manage your own personal change towards self-
appreciation

Look at me
You may think you see
Who I really am
But you'll never know me
Every day
It's as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart
I am now
In a world where I
Have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow
I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am

What is It
Change is a part of life. Everyday things change for people. It can be little things
such as what you are going to wear, eat for breakfast, or what route to take to
work. There can be how changes such as losing your job, getting married, or losing
a love one, and change with your own body parts. We all have ways to deal with
change. The way we deal with change is something that was instilled in us the day
we were born. Change always begins with our self. We must appreciate every
change in our life whether it is good or bad. We must embrace our weaknesses and
strengths.
The following list suggests five different ways to help manage change
4. Be true to yourself.
7
What is Personal Change?
All Adolescents undergo similar changes as they grow and develop. However, there
are differences in the way these changes happen to an Adolescent: hence, change
similar and at the same time unique for each adolescent. The changes happen that
happen during puberty are normal to adolescent.
8
Physical Changes.
Emotional Changes
• Have erratic emotions and behaviours, mood swing is mostly experienced.
• Have emotions that are frightening and poorly understood. Often triggered
by hormonal imbalance, may cause regression to more childish behaviour
patterns.
• As part of being moody and restless, they are introspective and often feel
self-conscious, and a lack of self-esteem.
• Easily offended and sensitive to criticism, vulnerable to one-sided
arguments.
• Being optimistic and hopeful, searching for adult identity and acceptance.
• Exaggerate simple occurrences and believe that personal issues are unique
to themselves.
• More emotional and this makes them open to being hurt or in danger.
• Believe that nobody understands them, striving for a sense of individual
uniqueness in their search for identity.
9
Indeed, as Adolescent, there are lot of opportunities for
you to cater a positive image of yourself: a person with
great potentials, a person who is innately good and a
person who is full and compassion difficulties. The way
you see yourself is yourself concept. The way you feel
about yourself and the you value yourself is called self-
esteem. Yourself esteem depends on the way you see
yourself. You have to love yourself and appreciate your
existence no matter what. Make the most of what you
have. Look at the good things rather the bad. Remember
