Dimensions of poetry
Philosophical text remains abstract in expression. Poetry tries to convey them through images. Images often
serves the additional function of symbol.
There are two types pf symbols
1. Common symbol (used in albatross)
2. Private symbol (used in rime of ancient mariner)
Metaphor the equation of pne thing with another without actual comparison
To see a world in a grain of sand
Concrete images drawn in precise language rather than poetic diction and meter. The idea was recreating
the physical experience of an object through words
Visual dimension
Visual art concentrate on poems shape and visual appearance

Meter and rhyme are further devices in acoustic dimension that held a dominant position in analysis pf
poem they are relatively easy to objectify and measure
Meter
The lines can be divided into feet’s. Feet’s are of four types
1. Iambic
2. Trochee
3. Anapest
4. Dactyl
Rhyme
1. Internal rhyme:
Internal rhyme are alliteration and assonance
Alliteration I the repetition of same consonant sound at the beginning of words in a
single line
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sound across the word within the lines of poem
creating internal rhyme
2. End rhyme:
Identical syllable at the end of certain line. Letter of alphabet are used for identification
3. Eye rhyme:
It stands between visual and acoustic dimension. Similarity in spelling but not in
pronunciation
