WORKSHEET
Class: 4 Sub: Mathematics
Name: ____________________ Sec: ____ Roll No: ______
4. Tick-Tick-Tick

Important concepts:

1. Clock: A clock is an instrument that tells the time.

2. A clock has two hands. The longer hand is called ‘minute hand’ and
the shorter hand is called the ‘hour hand’.

 The minute hand shows the time in ‘minutes’.

 The hour hand shows the time in ‘hours’.
 The face or dial of the clock is divided into 12 equal main divisions
and marked with numbers from 1 to 12. Each main division
represents an hour.

Page 1 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
 Each main division is further divided into 5 small divisions. Each
small division represents a minute.
 The minute hand takes 1 minute to move from one small division
to another small division. Therefore, the minute hand takes 5
minutes to move from one main division to another main division
i.e. it takes 5 minutes to move from 2 to 3.
 The minute hand completes one round in 1 hour. It completes 24
rounds in a day.
 The hour hand takes 1 hour to move from one main division to
another main division.
 The hour hand completes 1 round in 12 hours. It completes 2
rounds in a day.

3. Some clocks have ‘second hand’ also. The second hand shows the
time in seconds.

 1 day = 24 hours
 1 hour = 60 minutes
 1 minute = 60 seconds

Page 2 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
4. Clocks are of two types---Analogue clocks and Digital clocks

 Analogue clock: A clock or watch is called "analog" when it has

moving hands, and hours marked from 1 to 12, to show you the
time.

 Digital clock: A clock or watch that shows the time using numbers,
not hands.

Telling the time

On the clock face

 the hour hand is at ‘7’ and the minute hand is at ’12’.

 So the time is 7 o’ clock or 7:00

7 o’ clock means 7 ‘of the’ clock

Page 3 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
Half past

Half past = 30 minutes past

On the clock face

 the hour hand is between 7 and 8 and the minute hand is at 6.
 So the time is half past 7 or 7:30.

Quarter past
Quarter past = 15 minutes past

On the clock face

 the hour hand is a little away from 7 and the minute hand is at 3.
 So the time is quarter past 7 or 7:15.

Page 4 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
Quarter to
Quarter to = 15 minutes to

On the clock face

 the hour hand is a little close to 7 and the minute hand is at 9.
 So the time is quarter to 7 or 6:45.

In minutes

On the clock face

 the hour hand is a little away from 6.
 The minute hand is at 4.
 Multiply 4 by 5 i.e. 20.
 So the time is 20 minutes past 6 or 6:20.

Page 5 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
On the clock face
 the hour hand is a little close to 7.
 The minute hand is at 10.
 Multiply 10 by 5 i.e. 50.
 So the time is 6:50 or 10 minutes to 7.

Page 6 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
Showing time
 Normally time is shown in as “Hours: Minutes”
Example: 07:30 means 7 hours and 30 minutes
 There are two main ways to show the time:
12-hour clock time and 24-hour clock time

12-hour clock time

Ante Meridiem (before ‘midday’ in Latin): The time from midnight to
noon is denoted as ante meridium (am).

Post Meridiem (after ‘midday’ in Latin): The time from noon to midday is
denoted as post meridium (pm).
Example: Our school opens at 7:30 am.
Our school closes at 1:40 pm.

Note: To avoid confusion we say 12 midnight and 12 noon. We never say

12 am or 12 pm.

Note: A day begins at 12-midnight and ends at 12-midnight the next day.

Page 7 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
24-hour clock time

24- hour clock time: The time is shown as how many hours and
minutes since midnight is known as 24- hour clock time.

Note: 24-hour clock time is used in railways, airlines and military.

Page 8 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
Conversion of 12-hour clock time to 24-hour clock time

1. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is less than
12 and am is used with it, write the same number to denote the
number of hours to change into 24-hour clock time.
(There is no change in number of minutes)
Example: 9:30 am = 09:30 hours or 0930 hours

Note: 24-hour clock time is always denoted in 4 digits and followed by

the word ‘hours’.

2. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is less than
12 and pm is used with it, add 12 to the number of hours to change
into 24-hour clock time.
Example: The time is 10:30 pm

10 + 12 = 22
So 10:30 pm =22:30 hours or 2230 hours

3. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is equal to 12,
write the same number to denote the number of hours to change into
24-hour clock time.
Example: 12:15 pm = 12:15 hours or 1215 hours

4. 12 noon is written as 1200 hours in 24-hour clock time.

5. 12 midnight is written as 2400 hours or 0000 hours in 24-hour clock

time since it is the ending of today and beginning of the next day.

Conversion of 24-hour clock time to 12-hour clock time

1. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is less than
12, write the same number to denote the number of hours and ‘am’ is

Page 9 of 30 IV/Maths/WS4/Sankar/2015-16
to be used with it.
Examples: i) 07:25 hours = 7:25 am
ii) 11:40 hours = 11:40 am
iii) 00:15 hours = 00:15 am

2. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is equal to
12, write the same number to denote the number of hours and ‘pm’ is
to be used with it.

Examples: i) 12:05 hours = 12:05 pm

ii) 12:30 hours = 12:30 pm

3. If the number formed by the first two digits from the left is greater
than 12, subtract 12 from that number and write the difference
to denote the number of hours and ‘pm’ is to be used with it.

Examples: i) 15:20 hours

15 – 12 = 3
So 15:20 hours = 3:20 pm

ii) 23:45 hours

23 – 12 = 11
So 11:45 hours = 11:45 pm

12-hour clock time 24-hour clock time

12-hour clock time 24-hour clock time

0:05 am 00:05 hours

8:00 pm 20:00 hours
