EQUIVALENT EQUATIONS

Equivalent equations have the same solution.

TASK 1 Are they equivalent?

Substitute the solution to the first equation into the second. Explain whether the two equations are
equivalent.

1 Equation 1: 4x = 20 Solution: x = 5 2 Equation 1: y + 5 = 20 Solution: y = 15

Equation 2: x + 9 = 16 Equation 2: 30 – 2y = 0

n
3 Equation 1: =2 Solution: n = 6 4 Equation 1: 5k = –10 Solution: k = –2
3
Equation 2: 2n – 4 = 6 Equation 2: k + 3 = 1

TASK 2 Write equivalent equations

1 Apply the given operation to both sides of the equation to form an equivalent equation.

a x + 8 = 0 (Add 7.) b 5y = 10 (Multiply by 3.) c 2k – 1 = 5 (Subtract 3.)

d 3n + 2 = 8 (Multiply by 4.) e 24 – 6r = 18 (Divide by 2.) f 15d + 18 = 10 (Subtract 18.)

2 Write at least three equivalent equations that have the solution x = 5.
