SOLVING EQUATION INVOLVING RADICAL EXPRESSION
What is It
A radical equation is an equation in which the variable appears in a radicand.
Examples of radical equations are:
3
a. √𝑥 =7 b. √𝑥 - 2 =10 c. √𝑥 + 2 = 3 d. : x – 6 = √𝑥
Steps in Solving Radical Equation
1. Arrange the terms of the equation so that one term with radical is by itself
on one side of the equation.
2. Remove the radical sign by raising both sides of the equation to the
3 4
index of the radical, example: 2 for √ , 3 for √ , 4 for √
Example: Eliminate radical sign in √5
Express √5 in exponential form
1
√5 =52
1
Raise 52 to the power of 2
1
= (52 )2
Apply power rule.
1
=(52 )2
2
= 52
=5
3. Combine similar terms whenever possible.
4. If radical remains, repeat steps 1 to 3.
5. Solve for the variable by applying the properties of equalities.
6. Check your answer using the original equation.

Example 1: Solve: √𝑥 = 7
Solution :
√𝑥 = 7 Given
(√𝑥 )2 = ( 7)2 Square both side of the
equation
x = 49 Simplify
Check: If = 7 and x = 49, then
?
√49= 7
✓
7=7 True
Example 𝑥 is
Hence, x2.=√49 - 2the
=10solution
Solution:
√𝑥 – 2 =10 Given
√𝑥 – 2 + 2 =10 + 2 Apply properties of equality
√𝑥 = 12 Simplify
(√𝑥 )2 = (12)2 Square both sides of the
equation
x = 144 Simplify
Check: If √𝑥 – 2 =10 and x = 144, then
?
√144 - 2 = 10
?
12 – 2 = 10
✓
10 = 10 True
Hence, x = 144 is the solution

Example 3. √𝑥 + 2 = 3
Solution:
3
√𝑥 + 2 = 3 Given
3
( 3√𝑥 + 2) = (3)3 Cube both sides of the equation
x+2 = 27 Simplify
x + 2 + (-2) = 27 + (- 2) Apply properties of equality
x = 25 Simplify
𝟑
Check: If √𝒙 + 𝟐 = 3 and x = 25, then
3
√25 + 2 = 3
3
√27 = 3
?
3 = 3 True
✓
Hence, x = 25 is the solution
Example 4 : x – 6 = √𝑥
Solution:
x – 6 = √𝑥 Given
2
(𝑥 − 6)2 = (√𝑥) Square both sides of the equation
𝑥 2 – 12x + 36 = x Simplify
𝑥 2 – 12x + (-x) + 36 = x + (-x) Apply properties of equality
𝑥 2 – 13x + 36 = 0 Simplify
(x- 9)(x – 4) =0 Solve for x by factoring
x–9=0 or x – 4 =0 Equate both factors to zero to solve
x–9+9=0+9 x–4+4=0+4 for x
x=9 x=4
Check: If x – 6 = and x = 9 ,then or If x – 6 = and x = 4, then
9 – 6 = √9 4 – 6 =√4
3=3 -2 ≠ 2
Hence, x = 9 is the solution Hence, x = 4 is not the solution
Note: Extraneous roots are numbers obtained when solving equations that
are not original equations.
