Problem Solving
1. The sum of the two numbers is 32. Find the two numbers and
their product if their product is to be a maximum.
Representation Let x be one of the number
of the given 32 – x be the other number
The product of the two numbers
y = x(32 – x)
The two numbers are 16 and 16 and the maximum product is 256.
If x = -13
x + 12 = -1 is the other number
Checking If x = -13
x + 12 = -1 is the other number
y = -25
The “difference between two numbers” refers to the distance between the two
numbers. Distance is the absolute value of the difference of the two numbers.
?
|x – (x + 12)| = 12
?
|-13 – (-1)| = 12
?
|-12| = 12
12 = 12

Cont. 2. The difference between two numbers is 12. Find the two numbers
if the sum of twice one number and the square of the other is a
minimum.
Checking: Substitute the values to the If x = -13
equation that represents the problem y = -25
Analyzation of the
resulting equation a = -500, b = 6000 and c = 32 000
= 50 000

Cont. 3.
The promoter of a theatrical play realizes that if the price per ticket is set at ₱800,
only 40 will watch the show. He also estimates that for every ₱50 decrease in the
ticket price, the number of people watching the play will increase by 10. What
should be the price per ticket so that the revenue (number of ticket sold × price
per ticket) is a maximum? What is the maximum revenue?
The maximum revenue is ₱50 000. This amount can be reached if the ticket price is 800
– 50(6) = 800 – 300 = ₱500.
