INTRODUCTION
Counterfeiting is a serious illegal activity where counterfeiters create fake currency to deceive
others into believing it's genuine money, often leading to financial fraud. These criminals employ
advanced technology to replicate the appearance of legitimate currency, making it challenging to
detect counterfeit money without proper knowledge.Governments worldwide have introduced
security features in their currency to combat counterfeiting. These features include watermarks,
security threads, and holograms, making it difficult for counterfeiters to create accurate replicas.
Law enforcement agencies invest significant efforts in locating and apprehending counterfeiters
due to the potential negative impact of this illegal activity on the economy.
To protect themselves, individuals and businesses must remain vigilant and familiarize
themselves with the security features of their country's currency to avoid falling victim to
counterfeit money scams. If you come across what you suspect is counterfeit money, it's crucial
to report it to the authorities immediately. Dealing with counterfeit money is illegal and can
result in substantial financial losses.

One effective method to detect counterfeit materials in cash notes is the starch test, which
identifies starch-related compounds.The aim of this project is to utilize starch test to tell the
difference between a fake note and a real note.

In summary, counterfeiting involves the creation of fake currency to deceive others, constituting
an illegal activity with severe consequences. Counterfeiters employ advanced technology to
mimic legitimate money, posing challenges in detection. Governments and law enforcement
agencies worldwide implement security features to combat counterfeiting, but individuals and
businesses must also play a role by remaining vigilant and informed. If you suspect counterfeit
money, report it immediately to prevent further circulation and potential financial losses.
Utilizing methods like the starch test can aid in identifying counterfeit materials and contribute to
safeguarding the economy.
THEORY
A starch test, also known as an iodine test for starch, is a chemical test used to detect the
presence of starch in a substance. It relies on the reaction between starch and iodine, which
results in the formation of a characteristic blue-black color.
The official real currency notes are printed from cotton sheets. Meanwhile, fake notes are printed
from regular printer paper.
In order to enhance the properties of the paper, Starch is added during the production of paper. It
means that fake notes have starch and real notes don't.
Equipped with this information, we can use the starch test using iodine to differentiate if a note is
fake or not. If the starch test returns positive, The note is fake and if it is negative, the note is real

Starch can be separated into two fractions ,amylose and amylopectin.The structure of amylose
consists of long polymer chains of glucose units connected by an alpha acetal linkage.As a result
of the bond angles in the α acetal linkage, amylose actually forms a spiral much like a coiled
spring. Fig. 1 shows four views in turning from the side to an end view.The tri-iodide molecule
slips inside the amylose molecule to produce the change in color.Since real notes do not contain
starch , the iodine does not produce a characteristic change/reaction.
PROCEDURE
1) Add a miniscule drop of iodine solution to your note
2) Wait for 10 to 20 seconds
3) Observe the area of application
4) Note down your observation in the observations table

OBSERVATION
With reference to Fig 3 and 4, We can infer that the note in figure 3 is fake and the note in figure
4 is real. Fig 5 shows the application regions close by to compare the change in color

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the starch test proves to be a valuable tool in the effort to identify
counterfeit money from genuine currency. Through a simple yet effective process,
it leverages the distinct composition of banknotes to reveal hidden security
features. As our research has demonstrated, the starch test can serve as an
accessible and cost-effective method for individuals and businesses to protect
themselves from falling victim to counterfeit currency.However, it is essential to
acknowledge that counterfeiters continually evolve their techniques to bypass
detection methods like the starch test. Therefore, while this method is useful, it
should be employed in conjunction with other advanced technologies and practices
recommended by financial institutions and law enforcement agencies.Ultimately,
the starch test exemplifies the significance of public awareness and vigilance in the
ongoing battle against counterfeit money. By spreading knowledge about this test
and encouraging its adoption, we can contribute to a safer and more secure
monetary environment for individuals and businesses alike. As technology
advances, so too must our efforts to combat counterfeit currency, and the starch test
stands as a fundamental step in this ongoing endeavor.
