REFLECTIVE ESSAY

Name: Nathaniel D. Cajayon Score: ______________

Yr. & Section: BSN 1-2 Date: September 3, 2023
Area/Concept: : Anaphy - Homeostasis

1. Briefly discuss the scenario / events / reading.

Homeostasis is when the body would adapt to the changes in the external
environment in order to maintain a steady internal environment. It involves a number of
physiological processes that are controlled by feedback mechanisms, which can be
either positive or negative. Negative feed back is a mechanism that the body employs to
keep variables within a narrow range which is also known as a “set point”, and by
counteracting it whenever the variable would drift away from the set point, it would
maintain stability. Positive feed back on the other hand is quite the opposite of the
negative one because rather than counteracting the variable, it would amplify the
variable in order to achieve a specific endpoint. An example for this is the process of
giving birth, it would release more hormones which means the contractions would
become stronger and the positive feedback will loop until the baby is born.

2. How do you feel about it? (You may include comments and conclusions)
Even though I have watched a lot of mind blowing videos on youtube, videos
like this is still fascinating to watch. Especially knowing the amount of processes
happening in our body every second. I honestly didn’t even know that sweating would
reduce our body temperature. I always thought that sweating is a bad thing and its great
to know that its not since I would often sweat a lot. In summary, homeostasis uses a
feedback system to control a range of physiological processes. Positive feedback
accelerates processes until a certain aim or outcome is attained while negative
feedback stabilizes internal conditions by counteracting disturbances. For complex
organisms to remain functional and in good overall health, both kinds of feedback are
essential.

3. What have you learned from it?

Homeostasis is actually not just a simple maintenance of the body but an
essential process that uses two different mechanisms which are the positive and
negative feedbacks. The part of the video that really stuck to me was the type 1
diabetes part. I thought that homeostasis was just something that keeps our body going
and never really thought about what would happen if homeostasis were to fail. Other
than that, what I have mostly learned about the video were the positive and negative
feedbacks and how they benefit the body in their own special way.
