1 FOREWORD

1.1ABOUT ARCTECH

1.2ABOUT THIS MANUAL


This manual describes the proper installation procedures and provides minimum standards required
for product reliability and warranty. Thoroughly understanding this manual is imperative to proper
installation; failure to follow the guidelines set forth can result in property damage, bodily injury, or even
death. Any modification of the installation procedures must be informed immediately to Arctech Solar in
order to be validated or not.

 Ensure that the installation is completed by a solar professional, and all tasks are supervised by
technical staff assigned for this purpose.
 Comply with all applicable local or national building codes, including any that may supersede
this manual.
 Ensure all installation equipment is appropriate for the installation, environment, and site’s
conditions.
 Use only “SkySmart II” original parts or parts supplied or recommended by Arctech Solar.
Replacements with parts from other sources may void any applicable warranty.
 Validate foundation parameters prior to installation, as a local geotechnical report may be
required to assess soil conditions. We recommend consulting with a local engineer familiar with
local regulations and build site requirements, including soil conditions, terrain and load criteria. All
parameters may impact foundation requirements. Lengths of foundation posts here are illustrative
only.
 Comply with all applicable fire codes including, but not limited to, keeping walkways clear and
avoiding obstacles.
 Ensure provided information is accurate. Issues resulting from inaccurate information are the
installer’s responsibility.
 Confirm with the module manufacturer that Ground Mount Tracker is compatible with the
selected module.
 Ensure safe installation of all electrical aspects of the PV system. All electrical installation and
procedures should be conducted by a licensed and bonded electrician or solar contractor. All work
must comply with national, state and local installation procedures, product and safety standards.
 See installation O&M manual for details about the periodic and preventive maintenance labors on
the trackers.

1.3SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS AND SYMBOLS USED


1. Comply with all applicable safety standards and codes, including those that may supersede this
manual.
2. Use only original parts or parts supplied or recommended by Arctech Solar. Replacements with
parts from other sources may void any applicable warranty.
3. Use only recommended tools in good condition. These tools must only be used for their intended
purpose.
4. Certified personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn by all personnel involved with the
activities described in this manual, according to local safety codes
It is mandatory to wear high visibility clothing, safety boots, protection gloves, hearing
protectors and a hard hat throughout all tasks comprised in this manual.
5. The working area and its environment must be clean and tidy with no elements that could obstruct
visibility or works.
6. Do not perform any works while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
7. Do not perform any works if feeling tired or sleepy.
8. Make sure that you adopt an appropriate posture while performing the tasks which will not cause
pain or injuries.
9. In case of doubt or if any of the above-mentioned safety recommendations are not in place, stop
and communicate to your supervisor.

2 GENERAL SOLAR TRACKER DESCRIPTION


SkySmart II is a string-powered single-axis solar tracker designed to be significantly more stable under
wind loading when compared with the industry state-of-the art.

The new tracker concept SkySmart II is defined as an Independent Row 2P tracker, which includes a
Synchronous Multi-point Driving System (3, 4 or 5 fixed points) which significantly increases torsional
stiffness.

This single-axis solar tracker consists of horizontal steel beams, aka torque tubes, (aligned in the North /
South direction) supported on a series of structural posts, which are fixed on the terrain. The torque tubes
support mounting rails and PV modules (along the East / West direction), these horizontal steel beams turn
(±60º) by mechanical rotating drive to orient the PV modules to their optimal position with respect to solar
radiation.

The solar tracker tracks the Sun’s position throughout the day and returns to stow during night-time or
when the stow strategy against the high winds gets triggered.

2.1DAYTIME TRACKING
This tracking technology uses geographic latitude, longitude, and time as the main parameters, and
astronomical algorithms (a general formula for the sun's position and horizontal coordinates) to calculate
the sun's altitude α and azimuth γ.
The tracker is a structure with a mechanism and electric motor, which is connected to a control box with the
tracking algorithm. This controller receives information about the specific tilt angle through an inclinometer.

2.2BACKTRACKING
During sunrise and sunset, the first row of trackers cast shadows on consecutive PV arrays due to Sun’s
low altitude. Increasing row spacing can effectively reduce power losses caused by shadow occlusion, but
it will increase investment costs such as land, cables, and construction.
Backtracking technology is a reverse-direction tracking routine. Its application in PV tracking systems can
avoid shadow occlusion between PV arrays ensuring the optimization of power generation of PV systems,
and reducing the land area.
In simple terms, the backtracking routine uses the control system to calculate whether there is a shadow
between the PV arrays in the morning and afternoon according to the module pitch, the array size and the
azimuth and altitude of the sun. If there is shadow, the tracker will turn in the opposite direction to avoid it
and until the shadow is no longer there.
The operation of the tracker throughout the day is: as the Sun's altitude increases after sunrise, the tracker
gradually rotates from the flat or starting position to the maximum angle until the time when there is no
shading between PV arrays. Then it goes into regular tracking, which is turning towards the sun. In the
afternoon, there will be shadow occlusion between PV arrays and the tracker will be in the backtracking
mode again, from the maximum tracking angle position gradually turning to flat position to ensure that there
is no shadow occlusion in the PV array throughout the day.

Once the "Slew Drives" have been mounted onto the posts, it is absolutely necessary to align and level
them, as described below:
1st ALIGNMENT STEP:

I. The “Slave Slew Drive A(North)” is the Initial reference.


II. Put the “Slave Slew Drive A(South)” onto its support. Center and align it according to the first one
so the line they form goes through the center of each post.

2nd ALIGNMENT STEP:

Slave Drive A (North)as Motor and Slew Drive as Slave Drive A(South)
Initial Reference regulated Point (Target) as secondary reference

E-W alignment & Clocking

III. Mount the “Main Slew Drive with Motor” in the center post so its center is aligned with the
previous slew drives.

If the alignment #2 is not possible, the Slew Drive to the North must be readjusted until the
same line goes through the center all slew drives.

Do not fix the Purlin assy. to the Torque tube yet, they must be moved freely as they will be positioned
in place later. See Step #5.

For the quantities of purlins to be pre-assembled, please refer to the detailed drawings in the Annexes

8.4.3 TORQUE TUBES AND DRIVE POST

Notice
-All the M16 bolt (part 3 in the table below) connecting slew Drive T.T. to slew Drive must have screw
thread sealant painted before inserting into the hole.

-Make sure the spacings are correct before tightening.

Pour some thread sealant into a small container (the thread sealant is anaerobic and will not solidify in non-
closed spaces). Try to keep the thread as clean as possible and then immerse the bolt into the sealant as 4
teeth are covered with sealant. Now you can install the bolt. Refer to below:

Auto-adjusting of Bearing Seat

It is recommended to place all preassembled purlins


on each side in order to perform subsequent steps
more conveniently.

The Bearing seat should be not fastened when it is installed, since it will adapt itself when the
Torque Tube is totally aligned. Therefore, no tolerances are needed.

shaft” installation:
 Step 6.1: Put the “Transmission Shaft Plastic Bearing” into the “Transmission Shaft fixed plate” first, and
then insert the “Transmission Shaft” into it.

 Step 6.2: Keep the above parts horizontally fixed on the General post “a” (Do not tighten in this step).

The AI control box is mounted on the torque tube side with the emergency button facing south.
This grounding cable connects the control box with the torque tube. The cable is fixed to the torque tube
with a self-tapping screw which cannot damage the torque tube.

A.3. FIXING PV MODULES TO PURLINS


There are two possible panel installation methods:
a) Tracker in horizontal position (0 degree).

b) Tracker in tilted to ~45 degrees.


For trackers that mount up to 120 PV modules, the PV modules installation must be performed
in the lower row in one go (as picture follows).

Then, the tracker can be rotated to -45 degrees to install the remaining PV modules.

WARNING!
For trackers that mount more than 120 PV Modules, the team at site should contact with
Arctech Engineering in order to provide them alternative installation procedure.

WARNING!
-Modules should be place in stow position (horizontal, i.e. 0 deg.) after panel installation is
complete or interrupted due to shift change.

A.4. ELECTRICAL WIRING


A.4.1. “ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENT” (AI) CONTROLLER
Power is obtained directly from the module string using a T-connector as shown below, DC
extension cable & T-connectors are provided by Arctech Solar.

When connecting power ensure the DC switch is in OFF position, and the emergency
stop is pushed in.

Lay the motor cable along the motor shell and make sure the cable loop radius is larger than 50mm.

Tie the cable with cable ties and cut the excess plastic tie.

Ⅰ:For Exterior Tracker (as shown in below figure)

Tie the motor cable with cable ties, make sure the cable loop radius is larger than 50mm.

The reserved cable of antenna cannot be too long, it should be tied together with motor
cable and control box cables on the purlin bracing.

Ⅱ:For Interior Tracker (as shown in below figure)

The reserved cable of antenna cannot be too long, it should be tied together with motor
cable and control box cables on the torque tube.

A.4.3. WIND SENSOR


The wind sensor post should be installed in an open & a leveled place. It should not be near wall or in a
place with big slope or terrain depression. The height of the wind cup’s center is 4m to 4.5m off the
ground.
Objects within 5m around the post should be at least 1m lower than the height of wind cup’s center.

Wind sensor must be adjusted to face north.

Foundation type for the wind sensor post should be followed as the one considered for the
project (direct ramming/predrill/concrete encased posts), but with the embedment of 1300mm.

Grounding is required on the wind sensor post above the ground. The post needs to be self-
grounded with the project grounding net. (Marked “A” in above figure.)
The grounding materials such as grounding cable or grounding flat iron can be used. Fixed with
self-tapping screw, welding or other installing methods according to the specific project.
