Opto Coupler
Unit Objectives
To study & test Opto Coupler Device.
co- Discussion on Fundamentals
Opto Coupler is a device consisting a LED & a photo transistor
encapsulated in a single package. Photo transistor sense the light falling
on it emitted by LED & collector current will flow accordingly (when
applied with proper collector voltage)
This device offers an electrical isolation between LED &
transistor,. Hence this device is useful where electrical isolation is
required between controlled quantity & control signal.
Normally this device (Opto CouPler) is used for power switching or
mains supply switching circuits.

Procedure
1.Identity Opto Coupler on the panel,
2.Locate LED terminal & Transistor Terminals.
3.Make connections as shown in the fig. 5.6.1 Actually
voltage across LED is less & can be monitored separately Fig. 5.6.1

4.Switch on both the power supplies.
5.Adjust Vice & remove voltmeter to connect at LED side.
6.Now apply voltages to LESS as shown in Table.
7.Note down LED anode current & collector current of
transistor (electrically isolated from LED).

Conclusion
Transistor (within coupler) conducts only when sufficient
current flows through LED. Transistor conducts though it is
electrically isolated from LED section of OptoCoupler,
