Introduction to the Course

With the ubiquity of Information Technology (IT) data has become the fuel on which business
run. As a result, it has become imperative for modern day managers to possess the skill and the
ability to analyse data and interpret the findings from this data analysis. This course will give
students an opportunity to understand essential statistical principles and techniques for data
analysis. The course will prepare students to use relevant technology tools for carrying out data
analysis. The course will use various instances of real-life managerial decision situations to
illustrate use cases for statistical and data analysis. The purpose of the course will be to expose
students to principles and techniques for data analysis, and inculcate a sense-making capability in
the students to manoeuvre the complex, data-centric business environment.
Course Learning Objectives
1. Apply the principles of statistical data analysis to business problems
2. Apply relevant technology tools for data analysis in business situations
3. Interpret the results of data-driven analysis to solve business problems

Description of Assessments:

Quiz: The quiz will be used to assess students’ ability to apply the principles of statistical data
analysis using relevant technology tools in business situations. The quiz will be conducted during
the 8th week of the course on UMS/ Moodle.

Individual Mid-term Assignment: The purpose of the assignment will be to practice the
principles and tools learnt in the course. The assignment will be case-based, requiring the
students to first analyse data pertaining to a business situations and then interpreting the results
to solve a business problem. For online classes, the students are required to submit the
assignment during the 7th week of the course on UMS/ Moodle. In case of on-campus classes, the
mid-term examination will be conducted in the 7th week in class.

Class Participation: The purpose of the component is to encourage students to take advantage of
the industry interface being provided by the GLs, participate in the discussion, delve deeper into
the topic by going beyond what is covered in the session, and then present their learnings in the
form of a write-up. The idea is to have a 'practice' focused assessment in addition to the other
'theoretical' assessments. The class participation in general has 10% weightage and the write-up
for both GLs (submitted on UMS) has 10% weightage.

End-term Exam: The end-term will assess the data analysis ability and interpretation skills of
the students based on data analysis. It will involve caselets that mimic real-life managerial
scenarios and will require the use of data analysis tools to arrive at solutions.

Disability Support

JGU endeavours to make all its courses accessible to students. The Disability Support
Committee (DSC) has identified conditions that could hinder a student’s overall well-being.
These include physical and mobility related difficulties, visual impairment, hearing impairment,
mental health conditions and intellectual/learning difficulties e.g., dyslexia and dyscalculia.
Students with any known disability needing academic and other support are required to register
with the Disability Support Committee (DSC) by following the procedure specified at
https://jgu.edu.in/disability-support-committee/

Students who need support may register any time during the semester up until a month before the
end semester exam begins. Those students who wish to continue receiving support from the
previous semester, must re-register within the first month of a semester. Last minute registrations
and support might not be possible as sufficient time is required to make the arrangements for
support.

The DSC maintains strict confidentiality about the identity of the student and the nature of their
disability and the same is requested from faculty members and staff as well. The DSC takes a
strong stance against in-class and out-of-class references made about a student’s disability
without their consent and disrespectful comments referring to a student’s disability.

All general queries are to be addressed to disabilitysupportcommittee@jgu.edu.in
