2) COMMENTS ON BEARING CONDITION

• All of these bearings inspected (02056/9/11/12) show distinct patches of grayish,

black streaks along the inner ring raceway and areas of the rolling elements.
Deepseated rust can be identified on the side faces of these bearings inspected
• A thin oxide film forms on all clean steel surfaces exposed to air. This film is,
however, not impenetrable and if water or corrosive elements make contact with
the steel, patches of etching will form. This development soon leads to deep-
seated rust. Deep-seated rust is a great danger to bearings since it can initiate
flaking and cracks and can be seen along the side faces of the bearing outer rings
inspected.
Acid liquids corrode the steel quickly while alkaline solutions are less dangerous.

*: Reclassify bearing to restore to condition conducive for re-implementation in the intended application without
compromising the cage assembly

APPENDIX A

Image 1 The water etching and subsequent deep-seated rust on the side face of the bearing outer ring –
bearing number 9. In this case the inner ring cannot be removed from the bearing assembly without the
application of force, which would be further detrimental to the bearing’s condition

Image 2 The water etching and subsequent deep-seated rust on the side faces of the bearing – bearing
number 11. In this case the inner ring cannot be removed from the bearing assembly without the application of
force, which would be further detrimental to the bearing’s condition

4) COMMENTS ON SCOPE OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED

• Thoroughly wash the bearings

• Assess condition of cleaned bearings running, i.e. raceways and rolling elements
and bearing external surfaces, i.e. the bore, outer ring outer surface and brass
cage assembly and associated components
