Example 1
Given information :
Dry density = 2150kg/m³
Moisture content = 9.5%
Density of the solids = 2890kg/m³
Assume unit solid volume
Calculate
a. Void ratio (0,344 or 34,4%)
b. Porosity (0,256 or 25,6%)
c. Bulk density (2354,25kg/m³)
d. Saturated density (2406.055kg/m³)
Example 2
An excavation is made on a level piece of land, 50m long by 25m wide and 2m deep. The sides are vertical, and it took
1050truck-loads to remove all the material that came out of the excavation. If each truck load carried a weight of 4950kg,
and the average moisture content for all the trucks was 10.25% while the density of the solids was 2650kg/m³,calculate the
following:
• Average bulk density (2080kg/m³)
• Average dry density (1887.5kg/m³)
• The volume per truck load (2.38m³)
• Void ratio (0.404 or 40.4%)
• Porosity (0.288 or 28.8%)
• Air void ratio (0.0951 or 9.51%)
• The number of truck loads required if the soil was saturated and the maximum load per truck was 5000kg (1088 Trucks)
Example 3
• The dry unit weight of a soil sample is 14.8kN/m³. Given that 𝐺𝑠 = 2.72 and w = 17%, determine:
a. Void ratio (0.8)
b. Moist unit weight (17.34kN/m³)
c. Degree of saturation (57.8%)
d. Unit weight when the sample is fully saturated (19.18kN/m³)
e. Determine the mass of water (in kg) to be added per cubic meter (m³) of soil for 90% and 100% degree of
saturation. (1.41kN/m³ and 1.84 kN/m³)
Example 4

a. Mass of the mixture (4.864kg)

b. Void ratio (0.318 or 31.8%)
c. Dry density (2010kg/m³)
