Trigonometric functions Part II

TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES
AND EQUATIONS
EQUIVALENT TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Goal: identify equivalent trigonometric expressions Tip: equivalent

expressions produce
the same graph

Symmetrical in the y-axis, f(-x) = f(x) ,

they are called even functions
(example y = x²)
Rotational symmetry about the origin,
f(-x) = - f(x) , they are called odd
functions

Equation vs Identity, what is the difference?

EQUIVALENT TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS
Tip: equivalent
Goal: identify equivalent trigonometric expressions expressions produce
the same graph

How can you verify that these equations are equivalent and identify other equivalent
trigonometric expressions?
Investigation: use Desmos to answer questions A-N page 388, in question N please state 4

strategies of identifying equivalent trig expressions
EQUIVALENT TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS
Goal: to create equivalent trig expressions using 4 strategies
Methods of creating equivalent trig expressions: ( p 388-389)
1) By using the period of the function (C,D)

2) By classifying a function as odd or even (E-G)

3) Using complementary angles (H, I, K) Complementary

angles:
4) Using the principal and related acute angles (L, M)

Cofunctions:
Practice in class: p 392 # 1, 3, 5, 7 Sin x & Cos x
More practice in class and at home: Tan x & Cot x

5
DOUBLE ANGLE FORMULAS
2ɵ =ɵ+ɵ, use compound angle formula to derive :
sin 2ɵ=
cos 2ɵ=
tan 2ɵ=

6
TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES
Goal: use equivalent trig expressions to prove that an equation is an
identity To prove that its NOT an identity:

Use counter example (page 413)

To prove that it IS an identity:

Use one of the following methods:

•Recognize and apply compound and double angle formulas (p 414)

•Simplify one or both sides of the equation to look identically
•Replace the expressions by the existing identities
•Use common denominator or factoring (p 414-415, examples 4 – 5)
•Rewrite the expressions using tan or reciprocal ratios

Practice: # 1, 3 – 9 p 417 #10-11 p 4187 ALL

TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS
Goal: solve linear trig equations
To solve a trig equation means to find all possible values of the angle using
graphical or algebraic method
Key ideas:

To find the solutions follow the steps:

1) make sure there is only ONE function in the equation (if not, use identities to make it a single
function statement) example 4 p 424
2) Use CAST rule to define the initial solutions
3) Use the period of the given function (Check k!!!) to find ALL the solutions within the interval

Practice: Solve the equation using the graph: # 1, 2 p 426

Use Principal and related acute angle: # 3-5 p 426-427 8
Rearrange the equation first: # 7 – 10 p 427 (one from each)
QUADRATIC TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS
To solve a quadratic trig equations follow the steps:

1) Check if the equation contains a single trigonometric function, if

not apply identities to make it a single trig function equation
2) Move terms to one side of the equation, introduce a new variable
(for example sin x=a) and then factor or apply quadratic formula to
find solutions for the new variable
3) Apply CAST rule to find the solutions on the given interval,
remember, some of the solutions from step 2 might be
inadmissible
