3.3.3 Modeling a CSTR Open to


the Atm osphere
The CSTR react or is open t o t he at m osphere and t he liquid level of t he
react or can change in dynam ic m ode. This m eans t hat t he vapour space
in t he liquid react or also varies wit h t he changing liquid level. I n order
t o m odel t his effect , t he React or Vent st ream was set wit h a const ant
pressure specificat ion. However, one addit ional m odificat ion t o t he
React or Vent st ream is required.

Since t he liquid level in t he CSTR can m ove up and down, regular and
reverse flow can be expect ed in t he React or Vent st ream . When vapour
exit s t he r eact or vessel ( r egular flow) , t he com posit ion of t he React or
Vent st ream is calculat ed from t he exist ing vapour in t he vessel. When
vapour ent ers t he vessel ( reverse flow) , t he com posit ion of t he vapour
st ream from t he at m osphere m ust be defined by t he Product Block
at t ached t o t he React or Vent st ream . I t is t herefore necessary t o
specify t he Product Block com posit ion.

I n t his exam ple, a t ypical acid gas t reat ing facilit y is sim ulat ed. A
wat er- sat urat ed nat ural gas st ream is fed t o an am ine cont act or. For
t his exam ple, Diet hanolam ine ( DEA) at a st rengt h of 28 wt % in wat er is
used as t he absorbing m edium . The cont act or consist s of 20 real
st ages. The rich am ine is flashed from t he cont act or pressure of 1000
psia t o 90 psia t o release m ost of t he absorbed hydr ocarbon gas before
it ent ers t he lean/ rich am ine exchanger. I n t he lean/ rich exchanger, t he
rich am ine is heat ed t o a regenerat or feed t em perat ure of 200°F. The
regenerat or also consist s of 20 real st ages. Acid gas is rej ect ed from

wat er wait ing t o be processed in t he st ripper. Wit h t he increasing
im port ance of environm ent al rest rict ions, t he sour wat er st ripper plays
a gr eat er role in t he overall pollut ion reduct ion pr ogram of refiners.

The Sour Wat er feed st ream goes t hr ough a feed/ effluent exchanger
where it recover s heat from t he t ow er bot t om s st ream ( St r ipper
Bot t om s) . This new st ream ( St ripper Feed) ent ers on t ray 3 of an 8 t ray
dist illat ion t ower wit h a reboiler and a t ot al reflux condenser. A qualit y
specificat ion of 10 ppm wt . am m onia on t he t ower bot t om s ( St ripper
Bot t om s) is specified. The t ower bot t om s, St ripper Bot t om s, exchanges
heat wit h t he incom ing feed and exit s as Effluent .

There are t wo basic st eps in t his pr ocess sim ulat ion:


1. Se t u p. This case uses t he Sour Peng- Robinson package and t he
following com ponent s: H2S, NH3 and H2O.
2. St e a dy St a t e Sim u la t ion. The case will consist of an 8 st age
st ripper, used t o separat e H2S and NH3, and a heat exchanger t o
m inim ize heat loss.

The product ion of synt hesis gas is an im port ant part of t he overall

I n a t ypical synt hesis gas process, four r eact or s are needed. This m odel
requires five react ors since t he conversion and equilibrium react ions
cannot be placed in t he sam e react ion set and t hus cannot be placed in

and an equilibrium react or.

Desulfurized nat ural gas is t he source of hydrogen in t his exam ple,


which is reform ed in a conversion react or ( Reform er) when com bined
wit h st eam . Air is added t o t he second react or at a cont rolled flow rat e
such t hat t he desired rat io of H2: N2 in t he synt hesis gas is at t ained.

The oxygen fr om t he air is consum ed in an exot herm ic com bust ion


react ion while t he inert nit rogen passes t hrough t he syst em . The
addit ion of st eam serves t he dual purpose of m aint aining t he react or
t em perat ure and ensuring t hat t he excess m et hane fr om t he nat ural
