CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Choosing a Career is one of the most difficult decision in life. As we encounter a lot of factors

that affect choosing our career, Parental influence, Peer Pressure, Financial Status or Lack of

motivation to pursue our career aspiration This decision alone has the potential to open the door

for our success or close the door of opportunity,

Few parents seem to recognize this impact and still believe that they have little to do with the

career choices of their children (Taylor, Harris, & Taylor, 2004). In a study from the University of

North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Taylor, Harris, & Taylor, 2004), almost half of freshman parents

stated that they believed they should remain neutral in regard to their child's career

development. However, additional studies show that parents have a greater influence than

teachers on career choice (Kniveton, 2004) and can even influence what major their children

choose to pursue in college (Simpson, 2003). It is clear that parents believe they have less

influence over their children's career decisions than the research supports. This perception

seems to differ from the perception of children, who often report their parents to be of the

highest influence (Ferry, 2006; Kniveton,2004). Due to this perception gap, it is important to

examine the result of parental influence in regard to their children's career choices.

According to Rani (2013), “Career decision making is a dynamic and ongoing process where

knowledge of self, values, interests, temperament, financial needs, physical work bring changes

in one’s life situation and environment.” According to Oke (2015), “Career decision is not just a

matter of selecting an occupation that is good match with person’s characteristics, but in reality

the process is lot more complicated. Good career planning includes a match between
requirement for a job, aptitude, interests, personality of the youth and expectations from the

parents. Good career planning leads to good career adjustment.”

of NDC, in selecting their courses for college. Specifically, this study aims to answer the

following research questions

 What are the factors that influence Grade 12 students of NDC in selecting their courses

for college?

 To what extent do the following factors affect the course selection of Grade 12 students

of NDC: academic performance, parental influence, peer pressure, personal interest,

and career aspirations?

 Is there a significant difference in the factors that influence course selection among

Grade 12 students of NDC based on gender, academic track, and socio-economic

status?

students of NDC in selecting their courses for college could be to determine the relative

importance and influence of various factors on the course selection decisions of Grade

12 students in NDC, including their academic performance, career aspirations, family

background, peer influences, and school environment

• This research objective would guide the study in collecting numerical data through

structured surveys or questionnaires that measure the frequency, intensity, and direction

of various factors affecting course selection decisions. The objective would allow the

researcher to identify the most significant factors that influence students' choices, as well

as any differences in the decision-making process based in demographic, academic, or

socio-economic characteristics
