Determination of essential oil rates Page(s) : 1 of 2+1
Approved :

Principal
Oil and water will evaporate together on heating, then oil and water will separate
Chemical Material
 Aquadest

Materials
 Analytical balance
 1 liter capacity boiling flask
 "Dean-Stark" distillation apparatus

Methods
 Weigh carefully ± 40 grams of the sample that has been cut into small pieces previously and put into
a boiling flask.
 Add water until the sample is completely submerged and add into the boiling flask a few boiling
stones.
 Connect the boiling flask with a "Dean-Stark" device so that it can be used for distillation work and
heat the flask and its contents. Distillation is stopped when there are no more droplets of oil dripping
with the water or when the volume of oil in the reservoir does not change for some time.
 Usually, this distillation takes ± 6 hours. Allow the container and its contents to reach room
temperature and measure the volume of oil that is accommodated.

Test Result Calculation

Essential oil rates can be determined based on the following calculations:

ml of oil distilled
Essential oil rates ( % )=
sample weight (1−water rates)
