INCREASING STUDENTS' LEARNING MOTIVATION IN

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2 TANAH ABANG

ABSTRACT

Learning ICT is learning that is based on the concepts of computer and

multimedia learning. ICT learning education is currently growing rapidly in
various regions. The purpose of this research is to find out the role of ICT-based
learning media in increasing the learning motivation of Tanah Abang II
Elementary School students. The researcher took a random sampling, which is a
low class consisting of classes 1, II, and class III and a high class consisting of
classes IV, V, and class VI. In this study using several methods, among others: 1)
Interview Method or Interview. 2) Observation Methods.

3) Documentation Method. The results of this study found that the implementation
of ICT-based learning media in each learning process was carried out well
supported by facilities and infrastructure, the commitment of the principal with
the teacher and the quality of teacher mastery in teaching. ICT-based learning
media plays an important role in increasing student motivation in Tanah Abang II
Elementary School, this is because teachers in delivering subject matter using
ICT- based learning media make students more enthusiastic and interested in
participating in learning activities, students are more focused and focused on
paying attention lessons delivered by the teacher and the creation of pleasant
learning environments for students

INTRODUCTION

The world of education in Indonesia is experiencing very rapid development. You

can feel this development now, especially during this pandemic. In the current
development of Science and Technology (IPTRK) it strongly encourages
educators and students to be more creative in making active learning. The use of
media in teaching should be a part that must get the attention of educators as
facilitators in every learning activity.

With media students will be more motivated to learn, encouraging students to

write, speak, and imagine more stimulated (Tafonao, 2018). Learning that is now
frequently used during a pandemic like today is e-learning or what can be called
electronic learning or e-learning. E-learning is information and communication
technology to enable students to learn anytime and anywhere. The term E-learning
has many meanings because of the various uses of e-learning today. Basically, e-
learning has two types, namely synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous
means at the same time.

Along with the development of progress in the field of communication and

information technology, nowadays many schools are starting to develop it using
ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) learning. ICT learning is
learning that is based on the concept of computer and multimedia learning. ICT
learning education is currently growing rapidly in various regions. In this case the
government itself supports the development of schools that use ICT learning.
Learning media is a container for messages that the source or distributor wants to
forward to the target, namely the recipient of the message. That the material to be
conveyed is the message of learning and the goal to be achieved is the teaching
and learning process.

RESEARCH METHODS

This research was carried out using a qualitative approach, because the focus of
the research was how the role of ICT-based learning media in increasing student
motivation. This approach is a process of systematically and intensively collecting
data to find out how the implementation of ICT-based learning media and the role
of ICT-based learning media in increasing the learning motivation of Tanah Abang
Junior High School 2 students.

This research belongs to the type of qualitative descriptive research, qualitative

descriptive is research in which the data are in the form of words (not numbers,
originating from interviews, report notes, documents, etc.) or research that
analyzes an event that occurs in the environment. to get nature in a process that
occurs then do a description.

DISCUSSION

Definition of ICT and Information Technology

Information and Communication technology or in the Indonesian language

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) includes two aspects, namely
Information Technology and Communication Technology. Information
Technology includes all matters relating to the process, use as a tool,
manipulation, and management of information. Communication technology
includes everything related to the use of tools to process and transfer data from
one device to another. Therefore, mastery of ICT means the ability to understand
and use ICT tools in general, including computers (Computer literate) and
understanding information (Information literate). ICT as a set of tools used to
communicate and create, disseminate, store and manage information. The
technologies in question include computers, the internet, broadcasting technology
(radio and television), and telephones. UNESCO (2004) defines that ICT is a
technology used to communicate and create, manage and distribute information.
The general definition of ICT is computer, internet, telephone, television, radio,
and audiovisual equipment.

According to Bambang Warsita (2008: 135) information technology is the

facilities and infrastructure (hardware, software, useware) systems and methods
for obtaining, sending, processing, interpreting, storing, organizing, and using data
in a meaningful way.
Benefits of ICT (Information and Communication technology)

The benefits of technology and information according to Abdulhak (2005: 413)

there are classifications of ICT utilization into three types, namely:

a) ICT as a media (auxiliary tool) education, namely only as a complement to

clarify the descriptions presented;

b) ICT as a source namely as a source of information and seeking information;

c) ICT as a learning system.

In a system that will be used, of course there are many benefits from the system
that will be used and developed, among the benefits of using ICT-based learning
media in the world of education, namely:

a) Abstract material (outside of everyday experience);

b) The Power of Hypertext (compared to Books);

c) Redrawing learning objects and students' mindsets;

d) Improving retention/memory of students by learning multimedia;

e) Overcoming the limitations of space, time and manpower;

f) Allows students to learn independently, according to their talents, visual,

auditory and kinesthetic abilities;

g) Providing the same stimulus, equating experience & giving rise to the same
perception;

h) Learning can be more interesting;

i) Learning implementation time can be shortened;

j) The learning process can take place whenever and wherever needed

The Role of Learning Media in Increasing Student Learning Motivation.

Motivation serves as a driving force in achieving achievement. Increasing student
learning outcomes shows the motivation that students have in learning. The
intensity of a student's motivation will greatly determine the achievement of
learning achievement, so that learning achievement will be achieved well

seems to play a very important role in increasing motivation

student learning from low class to high class. As for the results of observations
and interviews conducted by researchers with Tanah Abang Junior High School 2
teachers in the utilization of ICT-based learning media in the teaching and
learning process at the school, they play an important role including:

a. As one of the learning facilities and infrastructure that can make it easier for
students to understand the subject matter delivered by the teacher because by
using ICT-based media it is easier for teachers to convey subject matter and
provide a real picture and the material presented is more focused.

b. Using ICT-based learning media can help students be more focused and active
in receiving the lessons delivered by the teacher.

c. Using ICT-based media motivates students more in learning activities because

students become more interested and interested in learning with the material
presented by the teacher or the media displayed.

d. Using ICT-based learning media can create a pleasant learning climate and
atmosphere for students because the teacher in delivering lessons displays the
material directly and provides real examples related to the material in the form of
pictures or videos that are displayed directly on the LCD projector so that students
are happy and not bored following the lesson.

e. It has been seen that ICT-based learning media plays a very important role in
increasing student learning motivation based on observations and observations
made by researchers during the learning process.

Solutions in Enhancing the Role of ICT To Face the 21st Century

1. Improving Teacher Ability

As previously discussed, the role of ICT has not been implemented optimally due
to the lack of teachers' ability to use technology in learning. The facts related to
the low competence of teachers in ICT are in fact still far away, Plt's research.
PUSDATEKOM data obtained data from 28,000 educators in Indonesia, only 46%
passed the ICT test (Regita Andriani, et al: 2021). Ability can also be referred to
as competence, in this context the researcher concludes that teacher competence
includes abilities, skills, responsiveness in the educational process in the form of
teaching, supervising, educating and directing activities. Learning in the 21st
century is related to technological systems, so that in essence teachers currently
have many demands to be able to master ICT and become professional teachers to
create a golden generation of hope for the nation in the 21st century. Basically in
improving teacher abilities in using ICT requires sensitivity and awareness high
on existing problems. Improving the quality of teachers can be done
independently or through various training. Decree of the Minister of National
Education Number 16 of 2007 states that professional teachers need to have skills
in the use of ICT standards. The benefits that can be felt by a teacher if he has
skills in mastering ICT not only make it easier for him to provide new
understanding and learning experiences for students. More than that, according to
Sukono (2018), he explained that from the mastery of ICT that teachers have,
teachers can also build closer communication with students through the use of
class groups or friendships on social media. That way, the teacher will easily
understand how the character development of students. In addition, through the
role of ICT in learning can also provide convenience in the form of time and space
efficiency.

According to Hartati Wirda (2021) in overcoming the problem of low teacher

ability in using ICT, there are several solutions:

1). The school principal needs to record data on its members (teachers) regarding
ICT abilities.

2). Principals need to provide training to their members (teachers) in using

laptops, infocus, etc. The trainings aimed at teachers are very diverse, including
through the IHT (In House Training) program, PPG (Teacher Professional
Education Program), tiered training, special training and short training organized
by P4TK and LPTK, PD (Professional Development), Educational institution
partnerships with schools or agencies as well as guidance by the education unit
(School).

1. Infrastructure

In an effort to build quality education in the 21st century, a regulation issued on

the National Education System Law No. 20/2003 Chapter XII article 45 paragraph
1 explains that: "Every formal and non-formal education unit needs to provide
facilities and infrastructure that meet educational needs in accordance with student
development both in the form of students' physical, cognitive, social, and
emotional potential. Referring to the ruling on the National Education System
Law, there is a need for innovation as an increase in the need for facilities and
infrastructure, especially ICT facilities and infrastructure. According to Amin
Akbar & Nia Noviani (2019) solutions that can be implemented regarding the
problem of lack of ICT facilities and infrastructure in elementary schools are:

a. Schools need to have the facilities and infrastructure of a large room

specifically for storage of ICT items such as laptops, computers, infocus etc.
Then, it is necessary to hold a special room such as a computer laboratory for
student learning. Because, not a few schools, especially elementary schools, do
not pay attention to these facilities and infrastructure. Even though the impact and
role are very important also in the context of the facilities and infrastructure
needed by ICT.

b. The school principal needs to establish good relations with the educational
institutions above him, this is intended to make it easier for the school to increase
funding assistance as an effort to meet the needs of ICT facilities and
infrastructure in schools.

c. The government needs to provide budget funds that are evenly distributed to
every school in various regions, be it cities, districts, sub-districts, villages, etc.
d. Principals, teachers, students and the school community need to work together
in maintaining and caring for existing ICT facilities and infrastructure.

e. There needs to be an effort by the government and the Minister of

Communication and Informatics, in creating innovative learning applications that
do not require high quotas. This is intended so that teachers and students do not
find it difficult to learn teaching materials by utilizing technological media
(Aryuna Dini Rahayu & Mohammad Syahidul Haq: 2021).

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the research that the authors conducted regarding the role
of ICT-based learning media in increasing student motivation in Junior High
School 2 Tanah Abang, it can be concluded as follows:

1. ICT-based learning media that is implemented in every learning process starting

from low class to high class at Tanah Abang Junior High School 2 is carried out
properly and supported by facilities and infrastructure provided by the school and
the commitment of the principal and teacher in improving the quality of teaching
by using ICT-based learning media as well as the teacher's ability in
mastery/teacher's ability to use ICT-based learning media.

ICT-based learning media plays an important role in increasing student learning

motivation in Tanah Abang Junior High School 2, this is because the teacher in
delivering subject matter using ICT-based learning media makes students more
enthusiastic and interested in participating in learning activities, students are more
focused and focused in pay attention to the lessons delivered by the teacher and
create a pleasant learning atmosphere for students
