The teacher seems to be well aware of Giwi's needs. She is supportive and understands the
importance of special needs support. That is why she referred Giwi to the Special Needs
Unit immediately after observing some red flags in Giwi's performance at school.

The stigma surrounding any kind of disability is evident among Giwi's parents. They felt sad
and ashamed. They seemed to be worried about how society would perceive Giwi 's
diagnosis.

3. Why should we raise awareness of special needs education?

In Giwi's case it is important to raise awareness about special needs education to avoid
discrimination address the stigma surrounding Giwi's diagnosis. Giwi's parents and the
society he is surrounded by is unaware about the prevalence of different types of physical

acceptance towards individuals with disabilities.

1. Identify the child's strength and weakness.

Embosa's strengths
● Cheerful and kind kid
● Good drawing and pattern making skills
● Very good in academics

● Paralysis
● Due to her disability doing household chores and gardening has become a challenge.

2. Examine the teachers and parents attitudes regarding children with disabilities

Although Embosa's parents were under the impression that having a disability would mean
that Embosa cannot live a normal and fulfilling life, they later realised a good education gives
her the necessary tools to succeed in life. At the same time her parents are supportive and
empathetic towards Embosa irrespective of her disability.

Embosa's teacher is supportive but she considers physical disabilities or disabilities that are
visible as the only concerning red flag in the development of children. This is evident when
she says, '...children in Embosa's class that don't have disabilities…', this shows that the
teacher is not knowledgeable about the different types of disabilities.

the society understands that children with disabilities can succeed and live a wholesome life
when provided with necessary tools with the help of special needs education.

essential because not all disabilities are visible. Raising awareness promotes diversity,
eradicates misconceptions about disabilities and helps misunderstood children get needed
