On October 3, 2023, we had an interview with Mr. Nelson Lontoc in Zamora Bilar, Bohol
he is a parent of a child with a disability.

Introduction:
This case study explores the life of a child, whom we'll refer to as Jowe Lontoc,
diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder
characterized by disruptions in thought processes, emotions, and perceptions.
a. The Cause of the Disability:
The exact cause of Schizophrenia remains unclear, but it is believed to be a
combination of genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors. Jowe has a family
history of mental illness, suggesting a genetic predisposition. After his mother died, his
illness got worse.

b. How the Disability has Affected the Child:

Schizophrenia has had a profound impact on Jowe's life. He experiences hallucinations
and delusions, making it difficult to distinguish reality from fantasy. This affects his
social interactions, emotions, and cognitive functioning.

c. Attendance at School:
Jowe struggles to attend school regularly due to the unpredictability of his symptoms.
He often requires specialized education and support.

d. Parent's Relationship with School and Teacher:

Jowe's parents have a strained relationship with the school and his teachers. They often
find it challenging to communicate their unique needs effectively, leading to
misunderstandings and frustration.

e. How the Family Handles his Disability:

Jowe's family has had to adapt their daily routines and provide emotional support. They
attend therapy sessions with him and try to create a safe and understanding
environment.

f. Impact of the Disability on the Family:

The disability has strained family dynamics, causing stress and emotional exhaustion.
The family's social life has also been impacted as they often need to prioritize Jowe's
care.

g. Government Support:
The family has received some financial assistance and access to mental health services
through government programs, but the support is often limited.

h. Support Group in the Locality:

There is a local support group for families dealing with mental health challenges,
providing a valuable resource for Jowe's family to connect with others facing similar
difficulties.

i. Challenges Faced by Parents:

Jowe's parents face numerous challenges, including stigma, financial strain, and
constant worry about his well-being. They must constantly educate themselves about
Schizophrenia to provide the best care possible.

j. Involvement in Child's Education:

Active involvement in Jowe's education, such as Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
and regular communication with teachers and therapists, makes a significant difference
in his progress and well-being.

k. Advice for Educators and Classmates:

Jowe's parents advise educators to be patient, compassionate, and open to learning
about Schizophrenia. They also encourage classmates to be inclusive, and
understanding, and refrain from stigmatizing behaviors.

Reflection:
This case study highlights the challenges faced by a family raising a child with
Schizophrenia. It emphasizes the importance of a supportive community, specialized
education, and empathy from educators and peers. It underscores the need for
increased awareness and government support for families dealing with mental health
disabilities. Raising a child with schizophrenia is an immense challenge that profoundly
impacts not only the affected individual but also their entire family. This experience is a
complex interplay of emotions, practical difficulties, and the need for unwavering
support and understanding. Reflecting on the challenges faced by such families can
provide valuable insights into the often-overlooked aspects of living with this mental
health condition. As we can see in the picture above Jowe is not there because he is
shy and afraid of people, he is an introvert person.
