There are several Roman generals who are considered the greatest due to their

strategic skills and significant contributions to the Roman Empire. Here are a few
of them:

Scipio Africanus (236–183 BC): Scipio Africanus was born into one of Rome’s five
patrician families. He proved himself to be one of the most cunning war tacticians,
and despite many previous defeats, he finally won the war against Hannibal in 202
BC1. He is often considered the greatest general of his era and one of the greatest
in the history of Ancient Rome2.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138–78 BC): Sulla was born in 138 BC in Puteoli near
Naples. Despite not coming from an influential or wealthy family, Sulla was well
educated and fluent in Greek. He managed to work his way up through the elite of
military and political society1.

Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (106–48 BC): More commonly known as Pompey the Great, he was
born into a wealthy senatorial Italian family. His father was a Roman noble under
whom he learned military strategies and political diplomacy13.

Each of these generals had their own unique strategies and contributions, making it
difficult to single out one as the greatest. Their achievements are a testament to
their leadership skills and strategic acumen.
