Module 2: Relating Architecture and Landscape, Site analysis and Site planning
a. Study of architectural response to landscapes and understanding the relation
between architecture and landscape through case examples.

Principles of Campus Landscaping
01. Integrating and articulating architectural and site design in conjunction with landscape.
02. Maximum preservation of existing trees
03. Focal or interest plantings.
04. Reinforcement of pedestrian access ways.
05. Establishment of sufficient open spaces for different activities like sports and
multipurpose use.
06. Retention of unique or particularly attractive natural features.
07. Planning for a variety of natural spaces.
08. Sensitively located seating – bench/ tables arrangements to enhance areas for study,
eating and conversation.
09. Consideration for noise in the outdoors.
10. Balance of softscape and hardscape.
CASE EXAMPLE :
FLAME UNIVERSITY , Pune, India

Area = 60 acres
The site topography resembles a saucer, a
valley surrounded by undulating hills that rise
200 m high, with the Sahyadri mountain
ranges seen one after the other.
The waterfalls, brooks, tropical species of
trees, are all natural forces forming a part of
the picturesque site.

Academic Spine
FLAME’s academic spine is the

central north-south axis around
which the entire campus is built.
It houses and connects the
entire academic infrastructure.
Master plan
 An open to sky pedestrian 'spine' emerges as the salient design feature that
connects the various blocks, enacting as a 'breathing space'.
 The classrooms, laboratories, faculty rooms, performing arts, visual arts studio and
recording studio play a part in the making of the spine.
 Orientation of the spine along the north-south direction keeps a major part of the
spine in shade, creating cool spaces of repose in the hot tropical sun during the day.
 The silhouette of shadows along the spine creates interesting patterns to behold.
 The ideology of minimum alteration of the original topography, leads to the twists
and turns of blocks with the contours of the rolling ground. Thus the otherwise compact
planning is eased and stretched out with this approach.
 Minimal footprint is achieved with the careful programming of the day-today activities in
the university. Thus achieving a reduction in add-on landscaping, and water
requirements.
Landscape elements in Academic Spine
PLAZA
The spine merges to the university plaza.
Plaza :
It is a confluence of FLAME’s infrastructure. It’s where the academic and recreation
spaces meet. It’s a great place for the FLAME community to come together.
PLAZA – KUND :
Apart from serving as a reservoir, the Kund’s serenity adds to the beauty of the
campus where students congregate casually.
Amphitheaters
Multiple open air amphitheaters are used for

performances, recreation gatherings and
conducting classes.
They are steeply graded for optimizing views
and sights.
Panel discussions and guest lectures are also
conducted.
