Lesson 22: Companions of the Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬

‫ٮ ﮳ﺴﻢ ﷲ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣٮ ﮵ﻢ‬

*AL-‘ABBAS IBN ‘ABD AL-MUTTALIB (RA)*

Al-‘Abbas RA was son of Abdul Mutallib and Nutayla and an uncle to

Muhammad (‫)ﷺ‬. He RA was only two years older than Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
and they both grew up together.

Al ‘Abbas RA held Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬in high regard, such that when

asked who is bigger between them, he would say, "Muhammad (‫)ﷺ‬

is much bigger and I am just 2 years older than him (‫ ')ﷺ‬and would

also say, "He (‫ )ﷺ‬is as good as a brother"

*HE RA PROTECTED PROPHET (‫ )ﷺ‬EVEN BEFORE EMBRACING

ISLAM*

After his father; Abdul Mutallibʼs death, the responsibility of the well
of ZamZam and the distribution of water was handed over to ‘Abbas
RA. He RA also held a high position among the Quraysh.

When Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬was calling his family to accept Islam, he

RA didn't accept it, even though he knew that Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬was

right. He RA didn't want to lose his position among the Quraysh.

But he RA always protected Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬. He RA even joined with

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬during the second Pledge of Aqabah where the

agreement of Hijra was to be made.

Al Abbas RA told the people of Khazraj from Madina, that the family

of Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬had protected him(‫ )ﷺ‬as much as they could.

He RA stressed on the responsibilities that would confront the

Muslims of Madinah, if they invited Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬to Madina.

He told that they should strike the deal only if they were prepared to

take the huge responsibility of honouring and protecting Prophet(‫)ﷺ‬

and his companions RA.

When one of Prophet's(‫ )ﷺ‬uncle, Abu Talib was facing financial

crisis, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and Al Abbas RA decided to help Abu Talib by

raising two of his three sons. Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬took care of Ali ibn Abu
Talib RA and Al Abbas took care of Jaʼfar ibn Abu Talib RA.

When his son Abdullah ibn Al Abbas RA was born, he RA took him to

Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬to perform Tahneek (a sunnah in Islam where a date is

chewed, softened and rubbed on the palate of new born).
This incident shows that he RA had a great respect for

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬and wanted his son to be like him(‫)ﷺ‬.

*THE BATTLE OF BADR*

Though Abbas RA didn't want to fight against his own nephew, he

had to take part in the battle fearing the Quraysh.

He RA gave a pouch with gold coins to his wife Lubaba bint al-Harith
alias Umm al Fadl, and told her to use it, if something happened to him
in the battle.

Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬had instructed Muslims, not to attack two people

from the enemy , Abul Bakhtari ibn Hisham and Al Abbas as they had
never harmed any Muslims till then and they participated in the battle
out of compulsion.

After the victory of Muslims in the battle, Al Abbas RA was taken as

captive by Muslims. On that night Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬could hear his uncle's

groaning sound, and he(‫ )ﷺ‬was restless.

Seeing Prophet's(‫ )ﷺ‬anxiousness, some Companions loosened

the ropes around Al Abbas, so that he doesn't suffer much.

When Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬came to knew about this, he instructed his

companions to show the same leniency to other captives as shown to

his(‫ )ﷺ‬uncle.

When Al Abbas RA told that he didn't have any money to ransom

himself, Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬asked him about the gold coins which Al Abbas
gave to his wife.

Al Abbas was shocked as nobody else knew about this matter, and

deep-down in his heart he RA knew, he(‫ )ﷺ‬can only be a Prophet.

*LAST OF THE PEOPLE TO DO HIJRA*

Al Abbas, went back to Makkah and narrated the incident to his

wife. Even then they didn't accept Islam.

He refused to take part in any Battle against Muslims after that. He

even sent a tip-off to Prophet(‫ )ﷺ‬about the war strategies of the

enemies in the Battle of Uhud, which indeed helped the Muslim army a
lot.

After 20 years of Prophet hood, Al Abbas RA finally decided to

embrace Islam and informed this to his wife Umm al Fadl.
