“Muscles in Art” Project:

Purpose:
To help you realize that anatomy is a huge component of art and society.
To help you learn the major muscles through surface anatomy. To help you
become well rounded, educated, and valuable human beings in society. To
expose you to the marvelous world of ART!

Requirements:
• A photo of the art piece you’ve selected to show the class (This should be
one of the first slide in your PowerPoint presentation.)
• Label all major muscles that can be identified in your piece of art
• A list of all major muscles that can be identified in your piece of art
• Interpret the artist’s musculature (or lack thereof) in your piece of art
o Things you might want to consider:
 What was the artist trying to say?
 What does the musculature or lack of say?
 What is your personal opinion regarding the artwork?
 Do fat people still count as beautiful?
 What does musculature mean in our society?
 What do we value in our society?
 What does that piece of art say about what society valued at
the time of its creation?
