PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The material to do the model of Maglev is high as the costs for magnets are
expensive.
• Magnetic force of the magnet must strong enough to levitate the model . The cost
of modeling maglev system using superconducting is very high because of
superconductor itself is very expensive.
• Also, to control the speed of train, a controller is needed. There must have a
controller that is connected to the maglev system.
• Large current through the motor is also needed in order to create enough thrust
force and drag force to propel the model train forward. If the current is not enough,
the train will not propel along the track.
OBJECTIVE!!
THE GOALS ARE :
• To study and observe the process of levitation and its various
applications.
• Our project is to build a miniature working model of MAGLEV, or more
specifically, we will make a prototype that can be instructed to move
forward or backward on a short magnetic linear track by means of
magnetic levitation.
INTRODUCTION
Magnetic levitation is the process of
levitating an object by exploiting magnetic
fields. In other words, it is overcoming the
gravitational force on an object by applying
a counteracting magnetic field. Either the
magnetic force of repulsion or attraction
can be used. In the case of magnetic
attraction , the experiment is known as
magnetic suspension. using magnetic
repulsion, it becomes magnetic levitation.

Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) is the magnetic
levitation of an object achieved by constantly altering
the strength of a magnetic field produced by
electromagnets using a feedback loop.
Electrodynamic suspension (EDS) is a form of
magnetic levitation in which there are conductors
which are exposed to time-varying magnetic fields.
This induces eddy currents in the conductors that
creates a repulsive magnetic field which holds the two
objects apart.
EXISTING SYSTEM
• Despite over a century of research and
development, maglev transport systems
are now operational in just three countries
(Japan, South Korea and China).
• The Shanghai maglev train, also known as
the Shanghai Transrapid, has a top speed
of 430 km/h (270 mph).
• Japan National Railway remains committed
to construction of a roughly 300 km high-
speed maglev line between Tokyo and
Nagoya by about 2025.
• Six commercial maglev systems are
currently in operation around the world.
One is located in Japan, two in South
Korea, and three in China.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
• A new design concept proposes that we rise
above it all, literally, by moving to a magnetically
levitated island in the sky, complete with green
forests, mountains, and urban centers. The
concept, called Heaven and Earth, was created
by Chinese architect Wei Zhao .
• Maglev trains reach speeds faster than 300 miles
per hour while hovering a few inches above the
rail. By eliminating friction, maglev trains use less
energy and can significantly reduce costs.
• Powell and his colleagues have proposed two
generations of space launching technology.
Magnets could allow a spacecraft traveling along
the track to reach speeds around 18,000 miles
per hour—enough to fly into space.
• SkyTran Pod is working on flying cars using
maglev technology, could carry three passengers
and would use maglev technology to reach
speeds of up to 150 mph.

WORKING
The train will be floating about 10mm above the magnetic
guiding track. The train will be propelled to move by the
guide way itself. Thus, there is no need of any engine
inside he train. The detailed working of MAGLEV train is
shown in the figure below. The train is propelled by the
changing in magnetic fields. As soon as the train starts to
move, the magnetic field changes sections by switching
method and thus the train is again pulled forward. The
whole guide way is run by electromagnets so as to
provide the magnetic effect.

Thus the power needed for the whole process is less

when compared to a conventional electric train. Amongst
the power used, only a little is used for the levitation
process. But a higher percentage of power is needed to
overcome air friction.

CONCLUSIONS
Maglev has the potential to become a major mode of transportation.
Maglev trains are the fastest mode of ground transportation and can be
more efficient than cars and conventional trains at high speeds. The
Shanghai maglev line proved that a commercial high-speed maglev
transportation is reality. However, due to lack of new infrastructure and
incompatibility with existing infrastructure large initial investment capital
is required for a commercial use of maglev vehicles. Therefore, the future
of maglev transportation is still uncertain.
