Siew May, Rita and Devika are classmates. They are at the school canteen during
recess. They are talking about their hobbies.

Rita : What do you like to do when you are free, Siew May?
Siew May : I like baking cakes and sewing.
Devika : I like neither baking cakes nor sewing. I like cooking. Do you like
cooking as well?

mother.

Read the text and answer the questions below

In Malaysia we have a lot of people who do volunteer work. Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood is
one of them. Let us read about her.

OUR MERCY DOCTOR

Do you know who Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood is? She is a specialist doctor. She studied at
Assunta Primary and Secondary schools in Petaling Jaya before soing to London for her
higher studies.

Dr. Jemilah returned to Malaysia to continue her studies and graduated as a doctor from
University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1986.

Then, she started to work in the General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. She was also a lecture in
UKM until 1995. Dr Jemilah now works at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital in Kuala
Lumpur. She has always liked to help the poor and needy, and that is why she formed
Malaysian Medical Relief (MERCY) in 1999. She is also the president of MERCY which
now has more than 2500 volunteers.

Many Malaysians, together with non-Malaysians, have joined Dr. Jemilah to serve those in
need. MERCY Malaysian has helped thousands of victims of natural disasters in India,
Indonesia, Cambodia, Iraq and many other countries.
