Discussion: Determining the Success of Technical Communications

The purpose of technical communication is either to inform, instruct or persuade readers.

Before composing the communication, a lot has to be done including analyzing audience needs

and determining the message and vehicle for delivery. The actual process involves crafting

persuasive and user-centered communication. However, after doing everything that is required

and the communication has reached the audience, how does the communicator assess the impact

of the message? In other words, how does one measure the effectiveness and success of their

communication? Measuring the effectiveness of communication helps communicators identify

what worked and what should be reconsidered in the next communication.

When evaluating the effectiveness of technical communication, it is important to consider

audience perception, change in behavior and impact on the business goals (SnapComms, 2022).

It is crucial to conduct surveys to evaluate audience perception in order to understand if the

readers found the message relevant, credible and consistent. In addition, doing so also helps

determine if the audience understood the message. If the audience understood the

communication, then it is obvious that it changed its behavior. Therefore, identifying what

changed or the actions taken by people in the targeted audience after receiving a communication

can help measure the success of the communication. Behavior change can be measured using

quizzes and surveys. Lastly, technical communication supports the wider company strategy. As a

result, it is possible to quantify its impact on business goals.
