and find any additional video clips from the net that lecture on Rizal’s literary works

a. Select two specific literary works which Rizal has composed during his scholastic
days both in the Philippines & abroad. Write a one-page reflection paper focusing
on Rizal’s concepts of nationalism as expressed on those two writings you
preferred. Your paper should contain the follow details:

a.1 Titles of the literary opuses


a.2 Short background of the two writings as to when and where they were written
a.3 Extracted “lines” or “quotes” from these literary works which captured your
mind and heart as to the concepts of patriotism imbedded in such writings
a.4 The remaining part of your reflection paper should dwell on your personal
experiences as to how you live out your demonstrative expression of patriotism.

“A La Juventud Filipina” and “To the Young Women of Malolos”

I chose “A La Juventud Filipina” and “To the Young Women of Malolos”. Jose Rizal wrote "A La
Juventud Filipina" or "To the Filipino Youth." in 1879 while he was a student at the Ateneo
Municipal de Manila. It was originally supposed to be a speech for a literary competition hosted by
the Liceo Artistico-Literario de Manila, and it was written in Spanish. While Jose Rizal wrote "To
the Young Women of Malolos" in 1889 while traveling in Europe. It was a letter sent to the 20
Malolos young women who had petitioned for the opening of a night school where they could study
Spanish and other courses in spite of objections from the Spanish friars. The letter, which was
written in Tagalog, was intended to motivate and inspire the women to keep up their battle for
equality and access to education.

One line from "A La Juventud Filipina" that perfectly encapsulates the idea of patriotism is, "Be
proud that you are a Filipino, that you are the descendant of blood of heroes who gave their lives
for the liberty and independence of our country." The significance of being proud of one's heritage
and appreciating the sacrifices made by the heroes who battled for the country's freedom and
independence is emphasized in this remark. It also motivates young people to carry on these
heroes' legacy by pursuing greatness and advancing the nation's future. "The Filipino is worth
dying for" is another line from the poem that emphasizes the idea of patriotism. This line captures
the great love and dedication that Filipinos have for their country and their readiness to make
sacrifices for it.

A line from "To the Young Women of Malolos" that best expresses the idea of patriotism is:
"The glory of the motherland is above everything else." This line underlines the significance of
prioritizing national interests over individual interests and protecting the honor and dignity of the
country. Another passage in the letter that emphasizes the idea of patriotism is this: "To be happy,
we must love our country, work for its prosperity, and defend its freedom with our blood if
necessary." This passage illustrates the idea that patriotism entails not only love for the country but
also an active commitment to its progress and well-being, as well as a willingness to make
sacrifices for its sake.

In his letter "To the Young Women of Malolos," Rizal underlined the value of education and
how it may advance national development. He believed in the ability of education to effect change,
as seen by his appeal for women to fight for their right to education against opposition from the
Spanish friars and the colonial administration. In contrast, Rizal urged young people in "A La
Juventud Filipina" to use their gifts and abilities to advance national welfare and fight colonialism
and injustice. He believes that young people can lead and effect positive change, which is why he
appeals to their togetherness and patriotism.

In conclusion I was moved by the words of Rizal to live out their love for their country by being
involved and active citizens, exercising their right to vote in elections, taking part in volunteer work,
and encouraging harmony and solidarity among their fellow citizens. By promoting local firms and
industries, investing in education and skill development, and being conscientious of their ecological
footprint and environmental impact, they have also contributed to the economic growth and
development of the nation. According to the speaker, it is both our individual and collective
responsibility to live out this outward display of patriotism, which is based on love, respect, and
responsibility.
