Excuse Me, Please

Number Sense to 5
A Math with Manners Game!
Created by Shelley Dickson

Excuse Me, Please!

K.CC.1 – Know number names and the count sequence.
K.CC.7 – Compare two numbers between 1 and 5 (10) presented as written numerals.
Mathematical Practice #6: Attend to Precision
Includes games for the following emergent skills…
K.0 - I can match finger patterns 1 to 5
K.01 - I can match finger patterns to numerals 1 to 5
K.02 - I can match finger patterns to regular dot patterns 1 to 5
K.03 - I can match finger patterns to 5-frames 1 to 5
Materials: Game board (finger patterns/numerals/dot patterns/five-frames, 1 to 5), spinner with
finger patterns to 5, or spinner with 5-frames, and 16 transparent counters (8 each of 2 colors)

Directions: Each child gets 8 transparent counters/chips. Choose who goes first. First player spins.
Player covers a square with a finger pattern that matches their spin. Second player spins next, and
covers a finger pattern square that matches their spin. If a player spins a number and there are no
matching squares available, they can say “Excuse me, please!” The other player has to remove the
appropriate chip so their partner can have that spot.
*By changing the game board, you are stretching the child’s understanding that a number is more than
simply a symbol (numeral). Because students will be using a spinner, the same game board can be used
numerous times and by different groups without duplication of game results!!
Winning: Play continues until one player has used all their chips/counters on the game board.

Note: Students need to develop familiarity with different aspects of number. Becoming fluent with recognizing
and matching different representations of number 1-5, student begins to develop a numerate thinking pattern.
These game designs are based on the work of Bob Wright, Southern Cross University, Australia and colleagues.

A portion of the materials contained in this publication

were created with the use of 1,2,3 Math Fonts.

Excuse Me, Please games are designed to help students recognize and internalize the 3 aspects of
number; verbal, symbolic and quantitative. Numbers 1-5 is designed to help students reach
mathematical practice #6 and K.CC.7. These games correspond with AVMR Construct 0 and
emergent numeracy development.
