BESS Installation in Indonesia

1. PLN and IBC Start Building "Battery Energy Storage System" This Year
Last year, PLN collaborated with the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) to work on building a
battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) in March, 2022. In
building this BESS, PLN involved its subsidiaries engaged in the generation sector, namely PT
Indonesia Power and PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali, as well as the Electrical Maintenance Center
(Pusharlis) business unit.
The implementation of the cooperation that will be carried out between PLN, IP, PJB, and IBC
in 2022 is to form a Joint Operation (KSO) for the BESS Pilot Project of 5 MW.
Later this BESS technology will be applied to all power plants belonging to the PLN
Group. PLN is targeting, after carrying out a joint pilot project, the joint operation (KSO) is
expected to be directly implemented in PLN's PLTD dedieselization program.
Meanwhile, IBC Finance Director, Bernardi Djumiril said the collaboration between IBC
and the PLN Group would accelerate the development of BESS in Indonesia. The company
targets to produce high-quality batteries at a lower price.

2. Indonesian state-owned company in battery cell manufacturing and BESS MoU

The government-owned Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) is exploring opportunities to
establish cell manufacturing and battery storage integration facilities with engineering company
Citaglobal.
IBC, also known as PT Industri Baterai Indonesia, was founded by four separate state-owned
enterprises in the Southeast Asian country. Its goals include creating a battery industry to serve
markets for electric vehicles (EVs) and other “game changing industries”.
Through the corporation’s newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Malaysia’s Citaglobal, a specialist in construction engineering services, the pair will explore
the development, design and construction of integrated battery cell, module and pack
turnkey manufacturing facilities.
They will also develop integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions, and work to
transfer knowledge and technologies for battery and BESS manufacturing. The initial agreement
runs for a year.

3. Indonesia, Singapore sign deal on solar PV, energy storage
Fri, March 17, 202 - The Indonesian government has signed an agreement with Singapore
on the manufacture of photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
involving PT Adaro Clean Energy Indonesia, PT Medco Power Indonesia, PT Energi Baru
TBS and other foreign and national companies.
The deal was inked on Thursday by Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister
Luhut Pandjaitan and Singapore’s Coordinating National Security Minister Teo Chee Hean at the
Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat, held in Singapore.
Under this memorandum of understanding [MoU], Indonesia and Singapore will establish
a cooperative institutional framework to facilitate investments in the development of
renewable energy manufacturing industries in Indonesia and cross-border electricity
trading projects between Indonesia and Singapore.

So far, most of the BESS development is still in the development stage and the signing of the
MoU for the BESS development plan in Indonesia. There is no further information yet, whether
the facility has been built or how much capacity has been completed.
