Plastic Bags: Handy or Harmful??

Can you guess how many plastic bags are used every year? About 1 trillion. That’s equal to 1
million times a million!

Plastic bags have become very popular for carrying our shopping home. These bags are light,
handy, attractive and strong. Shopkeepers find them easy to store and customers regard them as
beneficial too. But experts say are destroying our environment. They are a big threat to our
environment.

Poisonous Plastic:
They have many adverse effects, for example, they are not biodegradable and produce noxious
gases when burnt. They choke the drains and provide breeding grounds to deadly germs.
Animals and birds mistake them for food and when they eat them, their digestive systems get
disturbed. These bags never decay and the fertility of the earth is lost due to their excessive use.
Thus, the greenery of the earth is hampered.

The poisonous gases produced on burning the polythene bags because serious diseases like
bronchitis, allergy, cancer, etc in human beings.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:


When shopkeepers first used plastic bags, it seemed like a great idea. They were cheaper. They
didn’t break easily. Plastic bags must be replaced by reusable cloth bags as they are stronger and
environment friendly.

Therefore it is our responsibility to stop the use of plastic bags. We should take an active part in
spreading awareness and get these plastic bags banned.
