Summary of the First Voyage around the World

Ferdinand Magellan – Portuguese Navigator. His wife is a Spanish Merchant, their family sells materials that are needed
in building ships. Ferdinand Magellan is a good navigator, which means he is good in readings compass and maps. During
16th Century, Portugal & Spain is a rival when it comes to navigation. They send expeditions to discover new territories
and claim it as their own. As navigator, Ferdinand Magellan dream to explore the world. And because of that he proposes
to the King of Portugal his plan to have a voyage. He had 3 main reasons why he wanted to have an expedition or voyage.
1. Despise that the Earth is flat. (during enlightenment, people believed that the earth if flat that you cannot travel
beyond a certain point, because if you go beyond that territory the ship will fall). 2. Travel from East to East and West
to West. ( If his voyage will be successful in proving that the earth is not flat, they will be able to travel different route,
and will be able to discover more territory.) 3. Control the trade of Spices in Europe. ( Spices is a great commodity in
Europe during 16th century, the price of ginger, pepper, onion, chili & other spices cost ½ bar of gold or more. They need
to find Moluccas Island of the Spice Island to be able to get tons of Spices.) after presenting his idea to the king of
Portugal, the king refuses to fund the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan. Because of this, Ferdinand Magellan, decided to
use the connection of his wife to present his idea to the king of Spain, King Carlos II. Magellan presented his idea to the
king of Spain, and his idea got the support of King Carlos. King Carlos, ordered his men to gather the crew that Magellan
needed, he gave him 500 crew composed of Ship Captains, navigator, priest and other. The king also gave him 5 ships to
be included in his expedition. The name of the ships are, 1. Victoria (Smallest ship), 2. Santiago 3. San Antonio 4. Trinidad
5. Conception. Antonio Pigafetta is the official chronicler of Ferdinand Magellan. Pigafetta’s tasked is to record all the
things that Magellan will do. Before they leave Spain, Magellan gave orders to his crew, but some of his crew did not listen
to him because they are Spaniard and Magellan is Portuguese.
Sept. 20, 1519, Magellan together with his crew left Port St. Lucar, Spain to start their expedition.
On Sept.26, 1519 – they reached the island called Great Canary, they stayed here until Sept.29, 1519. They store their
food supply in this island.
October 1, 1519 – they reached the port of Monterose, they stop in this island to get PITCH (this is a material that is
needed to maintain the ships)
Ferdinand Magellan first passed the Atlantic Ocean, while they are in Atlantic Ocean, they saw an island, and they landed
on the island called Port of San Julian. In this island happened the Captain’s Mutiny, wherein some of the captains rebel
against Ferdinand Magellan. Some of the captains and crews are killed in this island and some are left behind. Also, in
this island, captains boarding San Antonio decided to go back to Spain. Ferdinand Magellan was not happy about it but
decided to continue their expedition. After leaving Port of San Julian, they continue their voyage, before they totally
passed the Atlantic Ocean, they met a strong storm, and it is the caused for the wreckage of Santiago. The 3 other ship
survived the storm. After they passed Atlantic Ocean, they passed a small body of water, it is called Isthmus of Panama,
after they passed the Isthmus, and they named it Magellan’s Strait. After passing the isthmus, they entered to a vast
body of water. It is peaceful & serene, so they named it Mal Pacifico (Pacific Ocean). Because of the wideness of the
ocean, they experience hunger, they stayed in the ocean for months. After travelling in the Pacific Ocean for months, they
found a small island. They called it Las Islas de Esperanza or Island of Hope(Guam). They stayed in the island for days.
While they are getting food, they discovered that some of the natives in that island is robbing their ships. So they decided
to leave the island. Before they leave, they named the island, Island of Thieves. On 1521, Ferdinand Magellan saw and
archipelago. Upon seeing the archipelago, they called this archipelago, Archipelago of St. Lazarus, because the day that
they discover the archipelago, is the day of the feast of St. Lazarus. On March 16, 1521 they found an inhabited island,
namely Zamal Island, they stayed there for a day and the next day March 17, 1521, they decided to transfer to the nearby
island, the name of the island is HUMUNU Island. They stayed in this island for 7 days. On March 18, 1521, a Datu Schione,
came to Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan welcome the chief by giving him, combs, red caps, looking glasses, bells, ivory &
other things. The chief was very happy so as a courtesy to Magellan, he gave him Umai (rice), Cochi (Coconut) & Uraca
(palm wine). They get along for days in the island. Magellan was able to show to the chief his artillery. They explore the
island, and discover that this island has 2 spring, and also in this island, Magellan saw the first sign of gold and white
coral. So he named the island of Humunu, The Watering Place of Good Signs. On the nearby island, Magellan and his
crew, saw people who called themselves Caphre. They are people who are naked, and only has bark of trees in their
middles. Their hair is black & long, reaching their wait and they carry daggers. They also had earrings that the hole can
fit an arm. On March 25, 1521 (Holy Monday) they decided to leave the island. They passed to the island of Cenalo,
Huinanghar, Ibusson & Abarien. On March 28, 1521 (Holy Thursday) they landed on the island of Mazzava. While they
are nearing to the island, they were approached by boloto (small boat) with 8 men. During this time, Magellan asked his
captive, Enrique to talk to the natives. Enrique is from Taprobana (Zumatra). After talking to the 8 men, after hours, they
were approached by Balanghai (long boats). The passenger of the boat is Rajah Colambu with his men. Magellan, gave
him chest full of ginger and large bar of gold. Rajah Colambu was amazed on what he saw. The next day, Magellan asked
Enrique to go to Rajah Colambu and asked him to say this words. “ I have not come to your country as an enemy but as
a friend”. After hearing this, Rajah Colambu was very happy and he asked Magellan to have a Cassi – Cassi (brotherhood).
After having Cassi –cassi, on March 31, 1521, they conducted a mass, because it is already Easter Sunday in the beliefs of
Magellan. They stay on Mazzava Island for 7 days. While they are in Mazzava Island, they explored different island like,
Ceylon, Bohol, Canighan, Baibai & Satighan. Satighan is 20 leagues (km) from Mazzava. They also found in this island
Barbastigly, a bird who is similar to eagles. After leaving Satighan, they passed to the islands of Polo, Ticobon, & Pozzon.
Satighan is 20 leagues (km) from Zzubu. April 7, 1521, they entered to the island of Zzubu, they fired they artillery, Rajah
Colambu is threatened but Magellan said that it is a courtesy or custom. When they landed in Zzubu, they were
welcomed by Rajah Humabon, and his men. Rajah Humabon followed Magellan and ask the chiefs of Zzubu to also
follow Magellan, but 1 chief refused to follow his order, his name is Lapu – Lapu. This is the start of historic battle. On
April 27, 1521, the Battle of Mactan happened. In this battle, the native was able to kill Ferdinand Magellan and some
of his men. Also, they were able to destroy the ship Conception by setting fire to it. Magellan’s crew, together with
Antonio Pigafetta fled and leave Zzubu. After leaving Zzubu, they continue to look for Moluccas Island, they passed on
these islands, Cagayan & port of Cipit, Zolo & Taghima, Cavit & Subanin, & Monaripa. Monaripa is an island wherein the
people only live in vessels. After passing Monaripa, they found the island of Butuan & Calagan, where they found the
best Cinnamon. But in the island, it is not called Cinnamon but Cainmana, Cain means wood, Mana means sweet. They
barter their 2 knives in exchange for 17lbs. of Cinnamon. Continuing south, they passed the islands of Ciboco, Birabam,
Batolac, Sarangani & Candigar. On October 26, 1521, they met a very great storm that cost small damage to Victoria. So
when they landed on Mollucas Island, they repair the damage. The captains boarding Trinidad, had a cringe idea, they
decided to leave Victoria and went back to Spain on their own. But as they travel, they experience hunger & some of them
became sick so they decided to go back to Mollucas Island, hoping that the men boarding Vcitoria is still there. But when
they land on the island, Victoria already leave and the people staying in Mollucas in Portuguese. So they were killed by
Portuguese in Mollucas Island. On Sept. 6, 1522, the Victoria, entered the Port of St. Lucar. Boarding Victoria is 18 crew
including Antonio Pigafetta. They completed the voyage for almost 3 years and trip for 14, 460 leagues. Pigafetta,
