Mr. D. LaBute, Principal Mr. D. Petro, Vice-Principal

Inasmuch as we appreciate students making an effort to attend classes when they are ill, it is imperative
that they not be sent to school due to the increased risk at which they put other students. Please make
sure to call the Attendance Office at 519-945-2811.

MEDICAL ISSUES

Please ensure that we have on file all pertinent medical issues that could impact your child at school,
including EpiPens, inhalers, concussion, etc.

MASKS

As per current provincial and local Public Health guidelines, students and staff reporting to school are
not required to wear masks, however, they should feel comfortable in wearing them should they so
choose. The office has a supply of reusable cloth masks should your child require one.

GRADE 9 ORIENTATION

An orientation for our incoming Grade 9 students will take place on Wednesday, August 31. From 1:00
PM until approximately 2:30 PM. Students will be going through a quick rotation of four presentations.
More information will be sent out specifically to our Grade 9 families in another email that will follow.

STUDENT TIMETABLES

Our Grade 9 students will receive their schedules on the day of the Orientation (Wednesday, August 31).
The remainder of our students will receive their schedules via email to their mytools2go account by
Thursday, September 1 at the latest.

The student timetables will contain their first semester schedule, along with their locker number. I am
sending a map with room numbers, entrances and locker numbers along with this newsletter.

A warning bell will chime at 8:15 AM to remind students that they should be reporting to class. Our
morning announcements begin at 8:20 AM. Students should be seated in their Period 1 class at that
time.

Similarly, a warning bell will chime at 11:40 AM to remind students to report to their Period 3 class.

Traditional cafeteria services will not be offered at FJB at this time. At some point in future, snack and
beverage vending machines may be installed, however, that timeline is currently unknown.

PD Days and holidays are indicated on the WECDSB-issued calendar for the year, which can be found at
the following link: 2022-2023 SCHOOL CALENDAR

UNIFORMS

Students will be required to be in uniform on the first day of school. (Uniforms are not required for
students attending the Grade 9 Orientation).

We will have used uniforms on sale from 12 PM until 1 PM on the day of the Orientation (Wednesday,
August 31).

LOCKERS

In order to minimize safety considerations in the classroom, students are generally not allowed to bring
bags into the classroom, so use of a locker is required.

Lockers have been assigned by the school. The location will appear on the student timetable. Students
will keep the same locker for the duration of the year. Lockers cannot be shared.

Students should not leave their lockers unlocked or unattended. Students should not provide their
locker combination to anyone. Students are responsible for the security of their personal property. The
school assumes no obligation for any items taken or stolen from lockers.

Only school-issued locks are permitted. They may be purchased from the Attendance Office for $10.00.
New Grade 9 students will have the opportunity to purchase locks at the Orientation. Locks that are not
school-issued will be removed.

It is the student’s responsibility to maintain both the interior and exterior of the locker and keep it in
good condition. Any pictures or materials deemed inappropriate will be removed.

Although it is for students’ use, the locker belongs to the school. The school administration reserves the
right to open and search any locker and its contents at any time if they deem such a search is necessary.

TEXTBOOKS / CHROMEBOOKS

We have several textbooks from the previous year that have not been returned, as well as a small
number of Chromebooks. Please call the school to make arrangements for their return.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular activities will be in full swing this year, from interschool sports to general interest clubs.
More information to come as it is released.

ACTIVITY FEE

We are continually striving to enhance our students’ secondary school experience both in and out of the
classroom. To do this to the best of our abilities, we have traditionally requested the payment of an
activity fee each year. The $50.00 is usually due upon completion of the enrollment packages each year.
This fee has not increased in over 20 years.

Our goal at FJ Brennan is to educate the entire person, giving them the opportunity to be well-rounded
citizens through their participation in many character-building experiences both inside and outside of
the classroom. In order to do this, we rely on the activity fee to pay for or defray the costs of retreats
(on- and off-site), sports teams (equipment, uniforms, tournaments, etc.), referees, post-season play
including transportation and accommodations, WECSSAA fees, our yearbook, the Dance Team, Muskoka
leadership, Ontario Drama Festival, Best Buddies through Life Skills, Student Parliament, publication of
student work, robotics, Science Olympiad, guest speakers, and special excursions, technology, learning
enrichment materials, among many other things. In all, we support or subsidize over 20 major teams,
over a dozen clubs, as well as events such as our Grade 8 Open House, and our Cardinals Soar breakfast.
These are not supported through our school board-allocated budgets.

Although it is certainly true that not every student has the desire, ability or opportunity to participate in
extra-curricular activities, the activity fee is used to support all school programming, and as such, should
be considered to benefit all students. These positive experiences enhance the learning of the entire
student population. FJ Brennan is the vibrant and desirable destination that it is because of the active
participation of our entire student body in all of the many opportunities we have to offer.
