Business Name

Adapted from the Strait Times dated April 26, 2008, the article by Subra VS an Associate Trainer with
d’02 International, presented 10 top reasons why you should think twice before naming your business.
After reading these reasons and using the format below, can you think of a name for your company
(should you have one in the future) or state the name of your company or business (should you have
one now):

1. The right name can communicate an attractive message by itself – saving lots of space.
2. If your company name is positive, easy to pronounce and catchy, your staff will enjoy
saying it, customers will enjoy hearing it, and immensely satisfying business culture will
ensue.
3. An astutely chosen name is easy to spell and leads to only one possible URL. This
ensures that more people can find it online.
4. A hurriedly selected name can create needless legal expense and/or PR disasters. If you
don’t do your homework, you might end up selecting a name close enough to that of
another firm – and incur legal action.
Checking with the local Registrar of Businesses is only the first (and inevitable)
step. Without adequate preparation, you might also choose a name that may be
received adversely by many. For example, you might think Blitzkrieg is a very “cool”
name and suggests speed and efficiency-but it’s the same term Nazis used at war.
5. Snazzy computer names generate news, because the media likes companies with fun
and newsworthy names.
6. When you tell someone your company/s name, and they are impressed at the outset,
your potential business with them has started on the right foot – practically half the
battle won.
7. A lackluster name lacks the ballast needed to begin any marketing communication of
your company/s product or services, while an attractive one paves the way for you to
soar with brilliant advertising.
8. An appropriate name attracts the right clients and keeps undesirable ones away.
9. A distinctive name helps previous customers spot it when searching Google or other
search avenues for services. For example, Ace Exam Results would stand out in a list of
tuition agencies.
10. If customers need to find you in any directory (during those times when this was still
available) or other searchable engines (or IT platforms at present) – a name near the
beginning of the alphabet makes it easier.
For the format, it should follow this:

Name
Year & Section
Course Code
A. Possible (or Existing) Industry (of your business)
B. Form of Business Organization (Choose from Sole Proprietorship, Partnership or
Corporation)
C. Business Route (Choose from Starting a Business, Buying an Existing Business or Home-
Based Business)
D. Origin of Your Business Name (How you came to think of the name)
E. Possible (or Existing) Name of Business (or Company)

For example:
A. Food Industry (Fast-food booth in malls)
B. Partnership
C. Home-Based Business
D. From brainstorming with friends
E. Eats to Go
