Movie Review:

1. Titanic
2. Incorporating both historical and fictionalized aspects, it is based on accounts of
the sinking of RMS Titanic and stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as
members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-
fated maiden voyage.

2.1: Titanic
2.2: James Cameron's "Titanic" is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-
fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line

production budget of $200 million. Filming took place from July 1996 to March 1997.
The filming schedule was intended to last 138 days but grew to 160. Many cast
members came down with colds, flu, or kidney infections after spending hours in
cold water, including Winslet. In the end, she decided she would not work with
Cameron again unless she earned "a lot of money".

SOCIAL SCIENCE 4

Activity 1:

( Gender and Sex) It’s meaning based on your understanding:

ꟷ Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that
are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles
associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships
with each other. Sex refers to a set of biological attributes in humans and
animals. It is primarily associated with physical and physiological features
including chromosomes, gene expression, hormone levels and function,
and reproductive/sexual anatomy.

What is your Gender and Sex?:

ꟷ As my gender, I’am a male like a guy, dude, boy or a man.The biggest
way that I had as a male is I can’t have babies. As my sex is I’am a guy it’s
because I had romantic or sexual attraction to the person that is my
opposite gender.

What are the challenges or expectation you’ve face based on your

sexual orientation?:
ꟷ As my sexual challenges or expectation that I’ve face is nothing because
lot of people that I know or I’ve seen they know that I’m a guy and they
know that I attract to my opposite gender which is true.

Activity 2:
Differentiate Gender Interest from Gender needs. How are they
related to one another? Give (2) examples for each?

ꟷ Gender interests are long-term, typically immaterial, and frequently

connected to structural changes in society that affect women's standing
and equity. Legislation promoting reproductive freedom, equal rights, and
more democratic engagement are among them. Gender interests refer to
how women and men are positioned in a particular society. Decision-
making authority or resource control are examples of strategic interests.
Many individuals think that because persons of the same sex have similar
biological traits, they all have gender-specific interests. Women's socialized
gender roles are dismissed in this viewpoint. interests that either men or
women develop as a result of their social positioning through gender
characteristics. Feminist discontent is not always present when considering
gender needs in planning. These are focused on the immediate
requirements of women for survival, including nourishment, living
circumstances, health care, and employment. These demands are formed
from women's lived experiences, are viewed as essential at all times, and
are recognized by women in their particular environments. the needs of
women in their socially prescribed roles as husbands and mothers.
Practical gender requirements for women typically take into account their
important role as reproductive resources in the family. The actual
conditions that men and women encounter as a result of the gender roles
that society has allocated to them give rise to practical needs.

ꟷ Men and women have distinct duties and responsibilities, which results in
distinct needs and interests. Both have a lot of societal clouts and are
connected. These two components are therefore crucial for
humans.Gender needs relate to basic needs like shelter, water, work, etc
and these needs if not met lead to inequalities.

Activity 3:
LUZON:

BONTOC
The Bontok (also known as Bontoc Igorots) live in and around the town of
Bontoc in the Cordillera of Luzon, and speak several closely related
languages. Historically they lived in large villages or towns (often called
'pueblos') and cultivated rice using a sophisticated system of terraces.
Oral tradition tells that Lumawig instilled five great lessons to the Bontoc
people, namely:
1. A man must not steal
2. One should not gossip
3. Men and women must not commit adultery
4. One must be temperate in eating and in drinking alcoholic drinks
5. All people must live simple and industrious lives.
KANKANAEY

Like the other indigenous peoples of the Cordillera mountain region in

northern Philippines, the Kankana-ey and Bago folk trace their origin to
nobody but the Supreme Being they call Kabunian. No one knows exactly
when the Kankana-ey and Bago tribes arrived in Bakun, now one of the 13
towns of Benguet Province. The Kankanaey people are an Indigenous
peoples of the Northern Philippines. They are part of the collective group of
indigenous people known as the Igorot people.

The Northern Kankana-eys honor their dead by keeping vigil and

performing the rituals sangbo (offering of 2 pigs and 3 chickens), baya-o
(singing of a dirge by three men), menbaya-o (elegy) and sedey (offering of
pig).

VISAYAS:
PALAWANO

The Palawano are a tribal group inhabiting the mountains in the south of
Palawan. They are cultivators, forest-foragers, and hunters who somewhat
resemble Malaysians. The Palawano language varies from region to region
but seems to have similarities to Malay.

The Palawanuns believe in the spirits or anitos who control their lives. This
is expressed in their ritual called "pagdiwata". However, contacts with
Christians, both Catholics and Protestants, resulted in some conversions.
Conversion to Christianity has resulted in a higher value on education for
their children. At present, Islam followers are increasing due to the
entrance of Islam believers who came from Mindanao.
TAGBANUA

The tribes of the Tagbanua can be found in the central and northern part of
Palawan. They are known to practice the shifting cultivation of upland rice
and are known for a rice wine ritual called Pagdiwata. The Tagbanua tribes
also believe in a lot of deities that they believe can be found in their
surroundings.

A Tagbanwa is believed to have six souls in all. A "true soul" called

kiyarulwa, and five secondary souls called the payu. The kiyarulwa is a gift
of Mangindusa to a child emerging from the mother's womb, while the other
souls appear only during the lambay ritual for the child upon reaching one
month or two.
MINDANAO:

MANDAYA

The Mandaya tribes refers to a number of indigenous groups found along

the mountain ranges of Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, and Surigao del
Sur. They are also recorded to be present in Mount Kampalili, in the
highlands of eastern Mindanao. The Mandaya/Mansaka are famous for
their distinctive costumes and ornamentation, which involves tie-dyed
textiles and embroidery using a sophisticated system of symbols with
named motifs. Beadwork and silver craft are also well-developed.

Tradition dictates that kubong be cooked by the riverbank. The Mandaya

have distinct practices in death, burial, and mourning. The corpse is
thoroughly washed and is laid straight with hands at the side. Close
relatives keep vigil.
TIRURAY

The Teduray are a traditional hill people of southwestern Mindanao. They

live in the upper portion of a river-drained area in the north-western part of
Cotabato, where the mountainous terrain of the Cotabato Cordillera faces
the Celebes sea. The Tiruray share a common mythic ancestry with the
Dulangan Manobo and the Maguindanaon. These three groups believe
they are descendants of the brothers Mamalu and Tabunaway. Mamalu,
the older brother, did not convert to Islam, which Shariff Kabungsuan had
brought to Mindanao, whereas Tabunaway did.Sep

It is believed that the spirits live in tribes and perform tasks in the other
world, much as they did on earth. While good spirits abound in the world,
there are also bad spirits who are called busaw. They live mostly in caves
and feed on the remoger (soul) of any hapless human being who falls into
their trap. Religion was not an important aspect of the Teduray people as
they only believed in the Great Spirit, which they believed created human
beings (Schlegel 8). Schlegel found it difficult to understand their gender
practices since this community did not have any grammatical marking for
sex.
Activity 4:
Distinguish the two unique studies of Social Science. Explain and
express how it can help our society today and in the future:

ꟷ Social Studies is the study of all phases of societies whereas Social

Science is the inference of those studies with the intention of solving
problems within a society, which may lead to the ultimate development of
the society as a whole.

ꟷ Social science tells us about the world beyond our immediate

experience, and can help explain how our own society works – from the
causes of unemployment or what helps economic growth, to how and why
people vote, or what makes people happy. Social science can open up
debate and give us a say in shaping our collective future. The social
sciences developed as a field of study during the nineteenth century. Social
science helped people understand the consequences and application of the
new technologies of the age, such as steam power.

ꟷ Social studies is to teach students to become good citizens. We are

living in a diverse society — one that requires knowledge of social studies
to succeed. With a social studies background, children become adults that
can participate civilly in our democratic society. The primary purpose of
social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned
decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic
society in an interdependent world.

Song/Poem Writing:

One For All and All For One

Equality does not discriminate.

The rights of the woman or man
Or the queer one’s fate
Is not for the supreme power
To calculate.
There is need to educate.
Being born as a girl
And not a boy, does not make you inadequate.
Being queer is natural,
It’s not a joke or illness, so don’t humiliate.
We must contemplate.
Why the queers are not allowed
To procreate.
They also can’t marry or parent
Lest they contaminate?
Accept, don’t differentiate.
Let her race wearing her spikes
Or lead in her heels in a corporate
She can choose to marry or not
Or celebrate her same sex soul mate.
Recognize talent that’s innate.
Why stare at her assets
Or laugh at his effeminate voice to subjugate?
Equal pay for equal efforts
Should be a basic mandate.
Victory is but a stalemate.
Misogyny and Homophobia
Reduce us to slave state.
The same traditions and customs
Also make you suffocate.
Time to embrace and liberate.
Aren’t we all
Just as ‘queer’ as we are straight?
Ditch the binary. Adopt the plural.
Let us give our gender norms an update.
We won’t yield. So don’t dominate.
We are unified against oppression.
We won’t let you manipulate.
Feminists and the Queer- we have but one aim,
Patriarchy, soon you shall disintegrate.
Activity 6:
Essay:
1. How do gender, sex, and sexuality, differ from one another?
ꟷ Sexual orientation is who you are attracted to and who you are
romantically, emotionally and sexually attracted to. It's not the same
as gender identity. Gender identity isn't about who you're attracted to,
it's about who you are: male, female, genderqueer. Sex is also often
used as an abbreviation for intercourse. Sexuality refers to the full
expression of who you are as a person, whether female or male.
Gender is usually categorized as either female or male, but there are
differences in the biological characteristics that make up gender and
how they are expressed. Gender refers to the socially constructed
roles, behaviors, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys,
men and the opposite sex. Sexuality refers to the biological
characteristics of men and women. In contrast, gender refers to the
socially defined roles and behaviors of men and women. If we expect
men and women to behave a certain way just because they are men
and women, we are following gender norms.

2. What roles does gender socialization play in the perception of

gender roles?
ꟷ Gender socialization is the process by which people learn to
socially behave according to the gender they were assigned at birth.
Children and adults who do not conform to gender stereotypes are
often ostracized by their peers because they are different.
Gender stereotypes can be a result of gender socialization.
Both girls and boys are expected to behave in certain ways in which
they are socialized from birth. Children and adults who do not
conform to gender stereotypes are often ostracized by their peers for
being different.
The family is the most important agent of socialization because it is
the center of a child's life. The division of roles between men and
women contributes to the emergence of gender roles, which lead to
gender-specific social behaviors.

3. What are some examples of gender stereotypes and how do they

affect the genders?
ꟷ Not criminalizing marital rape, perceiving that women are the
sexual property of men. Failing to investigate, prosecute and
sentence sexual violence against women, believing that victims of
sexual violence agreed to sexual acts, as they were not dressing and
behaving “modestly”.Examples: Girls are more fragile, Girls are
interested in fashion, the arts and boys, Girls are more perfectionist
and better at housework, Boys don't cry, Boys like video games and
sports, and Boys are more disorderly and less meticulous in doing
household. Gender role stereotypes can also influence how men and
women express psychological distress, and how they manage painful
emotions which affect their well-being (such as sadness, fear, and
anger). Stereotypes are widespread but fixed ideas about specific
groups of people. If the stereotype is negative, research suggests, it
may lead us to consciously or subconsciously avoid or limit contact
with entire groups of people and negative experiences with a
stereotyped group can reinforce this avoidant behavior. Gender
stereotypes shape self-perception, attitudes to relationships and
influence participation in the world of work. In a school environment,
they can affect a young person's classroom experience, academic
performance, subject choice and well-being.
4. What is SOGIE and how is it relevant to the Philippine Society?
ꟷ SOGIE An acronym for sexual orientation, gender identity, and
gender expression. Everyone has a sexual orientation, gender
identity, and gender expression. LGBTQ An acronym for lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, and queer and/or questioning. As of 2022, the
predominantly Catholic country hasn't enacted into law the SOGIE
Equality Bill, which seeks to prevent discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. The earliest version
of the bill was filed in 2000 as the Employment Non-Discrimination
Bill. The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality
Bill, also known as the Anti-Discrimination Bill (ADB) is a bill that was
proposed by the Congress of the Philippines. It is intended to prevent
various economic and public accommodation-related acts of
discrimination against people base on their sexual orientation, gender
identity or expression.
