PREAMBLE
The original youth programme of the protestant church was a denominational programme for
many denominations.
On 15 May 1889 the Epworth league of the Methodist Episcopal Church was found at Central
Methodist (now Epworth-Euclid Methodist Church) in Cleverland. The Epworth League in
turn was a merger of five pioneering youth organizations that had begun their work as early as
1877.
In 1889 a group of young people's societies in Methodist Episcopal Church south was
organized into a cooperation union. Believing in Episcopal Church South, meeting in St. Louis,
Missouri in 1890 was responding to a memorial (resolution) that had been sent by the Trinity
Methodist Church South of Los Angeles, California. (This action the Methodist Episcopal
Church South)
The Methodist Youth fellowship was formally installed in the watch night services; December
31 1941.It represented the majority of the groups from the Methodist Protestant Church, the
Methodist Episcopal Church South and Methodist Church. These three churches were formed
at the conference of 1939 at Kansas City, Missouri.
At the time of the unification of the three churches, the General Conference of the Methodist
Church gave the General Board of education the responsibility of bringing together the youth
work of the church into a unified programme for the youth of the Methodist Church. To
accomplish this, the board of Education set up a youth commission to conduct a careful study
and make recommendations for this unified programme. After months of work, consultation
by staff with youth group and leaders throughout the nation, a nationwide meeting of youth
and the church was held.
'The United Methodist Youth Fellowship'.
At the same time the democratic new Methodist Youth Fellowship moved forward to meet
needs of a new generation of youth in every community in America. The Methodist Youth
Fellowship was accepted as an official Youth Organization under the Board of Education
according to the discipline of the ninth session of Rhodesia Annual Conference of the
Methodist Church in 1947, held at Old Mutare, Southern Rhodesia, August 26 to 10 September
1947.The first Youth president was Richard Chikosi, first youth Counsellor was Reverend QC
Robets Jr.
In 1950 a request was put to the conference to invite designs for the badges and School
Headmasters were urged to incorporate students to contribute designs and Shedman Jakarasi
was recommended to take over from Richard Chikosi. A new executive was elected at the MYF
Conference in January 1951.The executive was to be presented to the Annual Conference in
August 1951:
President Langton Chikukwa,
Vice Ben Jabga
Secretary Jane Esau
Treasurer Alfred Gowera.
UNITED METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP CONSTITUTION 4
ZIMBABWE EPISCOPAL AREA
At the same MYF Annual conference in January 1951 the youth agreed on the MYF badge and
the secretary was asked to write to companies in England and America to get the cost of pins.
It was agreed that 500 MYF pins be ordered in sale 1952.
The idea of establishing a Junior Church for under 12 years came from the MYF
recommendation to the annual conference in 1955. However, MYF was the leading church in
the country. The first MYF constitution was presented to the annual conference for adoption in
April 1957
The plan of union brought together the Methodist church and the Evangelical United Brethren
Church, two churches that share fundamental doctrines of faith. Ecclesiastical organization was
similar. They are Protestant Churches whose spiritual life and thought came out of the
Protestant reformation of the sixteenth century.
Since beginning, they lived and worked side by side in friendly fellowship. Had it not been for
the difference in language (the Methodist working among English-speaking people and the
Evangelical United Brethren working among those speaking German). They might from the
beginning have been one Church.
Today the language is gone and the uniting of forces for our common tasks and calling seems
appropriate and timely. Briefly history of the start of the two Churches is taken from their
respective disciplines found in the book of discipline of the United Methodist Church from
1968.
