Comments

Noteworthy findings from necropsy are enlarged liver, oropharynx mucous discharge,
skin hematoma, brain hemorrhage and cardiac chamber enlargement. Empty digestive tract
means no food intake for more than 10 hours prior of the death. Enlarged liver might indicate
liver inflammation, liver tumor, or liver congestion. Oropharynx discharge might indicate
upper respiratory disease, however mucous wet mount checked were insignificant. Skin
hematoma might indicate physical trauma before deceased or part of post mortem changes
causing disruption of skin tissue integrity after death. Brain hemorrhage on the other hand
can cause brain malfunction, collapse and brain dead if it happens before mortality. Cardiac
chamber enlargement indicates heart function disorder and can cause cardiac arrest and
sudden death. Nature of the disease might not well determined without further diagnostic
approach. Histopathology check is recommended.

Diagnosis
Due to the post mortem changes when necropsy was performed, definitive diagnosis might
not be accurate. Several possibilities causing mortality of strix owl are cardiac arrest and brain
hemorrhage.
