5. Painting Specification
1. Scope

This document shows the procedure of HYOSUNG’s Painting System. This painting procedure is written based on
ISO12944 standard, SSPC standard.

2. Surface pre-treatment

(1) Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP1)


The removal of foreign matter (oil, grease, soil, drawing and cutting compounds, and other contaminants)
from a surface by the use of solvents, emulsions, cleaning compounds, steam cleaning, or similar materials
and methods that involve a solvent or cleaning action.
Prior to solvent cleaning, soil, cement spatter, salts, or other foreign matter (other than grease or oil) shall be
removed using a stiff fiber brush or wire brush, or by scraping.

(2) Hand Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP2) & Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP3)
The Hand Tool Cleaning or Power Tool Cleaning is applied where blasting is not possible and repairs are
required.

- Hand Tool Cleaning: Use hand wire brushing, hand abrading, hand scraping, or other similar non-impact
methods to remove all loose mill scale, all loose or non-adherent rust, and all loose paint.

- Power Tool Cleaning: Use power wire brushing, power abrading, power impact, or other power rotary
tools to remove all loose mill scale, all loose or non-adherent rust, and all loose paint.

After surface pre-treatment, clean surface by wiping with a clean cloth dampened with solvent.
If, as the result of sanding, bare metal is exposed restore the finish system pretreatment and primer using
approved touch-up procedures.

(3) Near-White Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP10)


After blasting, the surface shall be free of oil, grease, dirt, mill scale, rust, corrosion products, oxides, paint,
or other foreign matter. Exceptions to this rule include light shadows or streaks or slight discolorations
caused by rust stain; mill scale; oxides; or thin, tight residues of paint or coating that may remain.
At least 95 percent of the surface area shall be free of all visible residues; the remainder shall be limited to
the slight discolorations noted above. SSPC VIS 1 (Sa 2 1/2) and the equivalent Swedish standards provide
a visual reference for comparison.
· Blast cleaning shall be carried out in an atmosphere where relative humidity is less than 85 %.
· All surfaces that are blast cleaned shall be coated with a primer coat within 8 hours.
· The surface roughness should not exceed a maximum of 100 ㎛ at least 40 ㎛.

(4) Pickling (SSPC-SP8)


Pickling is a method of preparing steel surfaces by chemical reaction, electrolysis, or both. The surfaces
when viewed without magnification shall be free of all visible mill scale and rust

(5) Brush-Off Blast Cleaning of Coated and Uncoated Galvanized Steel, Stainless Steel and
Non-Ferrous Metals (SSPC SP16)
After blasting, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, loose mill scale, loose rust, loose
paint. Bare metal substrates shall have a minimum 19 microns (0.75 mil) of uniform surface profile.
3. Application of Coatings

(1) Oil, grease, salt deposits, soil dust, or foreign matter deposited on the surface after surface preparation has
been completed shall be removed prior to painting. If rusting occurs after completion of surface preparation,
the surface shall be re-cleaned in accordance with the original method

(2) Painting shall be carried out in an atmosphere where relative humidity is less than 85 %.
(No application if the difference between the steel surface temperature and Dew Point is less than 3℃.)

(3) Paint shall be applied by one, or a combination, of the following methods:


· Brushing, Roller coating, Air Spraying, Airless Spraying, Flow Coating

(4) Paint shall not be force dried so as to cause checking, wrinkling, blistering, pore formation, or any condition
detrimental to its appearance. Newly painted surfaces shall be protected to the fullest extent feasible from rain,
condensation, contamination, snow, and freezing until the coating has dried.

(5) Spot repairs shall be carried out such that the patch painting extends at least 25 mm beyond the damaged
areas. Spot repairs shall reinstate each of the previous coats and shall commence directly after surface
preparation.

(6) Paints containing metallic lead, or zinc shall not be used to overcoat stainless steel materials.

4. Inspection

(1) Coating Materials


a) Verify that particular coating system and solvents for thinning are as specified and from the
same Coating Manufacturer.
b) Verify that “Shelf Life” of coating materials has not been exceeded.

(2) Environmental Conditions


Confirm that substrate, ambient and dew point temperatures are as specified for proper surface preparation
and coating application

(3) Surface Preparation


a) Verify cleanliness of surface prior to blast cleaning operations.
The presence of oil and grease shall be checked by visual or rubbing a clean white cloth on
steel surface to detect oil or grease, or by sprinkling water on the steel surface. Contaminants shall be
removed from the surface in accordance with SSPC SP1
b) Verify cleanliness of surface after blast cleaning.
Inspect correctness of surface preparation for specified cleanliness prior to coating. Verify anchor profile
in accordance with comparator or ASTM D4417 method C or ISO 8503-5 by using a Spring-loaded
micrometer and either a coarse or extra coarse replica tape as required by the anchor profile depth.

(4) Coating Thickness


a) The dry film thickness of primer, intermediate, finish coats and total thickness shall be checked using a
properly calibrated electromagnetic induction type or eddy current type gauge in accordance with Society
for Protective Coatings (SSPC)-PA2.
b) Coating thickness on stainless steel shall be checked using an eddy current type gauge suitable for use
on non-ferrous substrates.
c) The allowable thickness shall not exceed the allowable thickness recommended by the Coating
Manufacturer.

(5) Visual test


Visual inspection for pinholes/holidays, dry spray, sags and other flaws shall be performed after each coat is
applied. All such flaws shall be corrected before application of next coat.
