The responsible German body involved in the preparation of this standard was the NormenausschuB SchweiBtechnik (Welding Standards Committee). Itshould be noted that the 1992 edition of the present standardis identical to the 1994 edition of international ‘Standard ISO 9606-1. Once the latter has been revised in substance, it will be adopted as a European Standard (.¢. as EN ISO 9606-1) and will thus supersede EN 287-1, General ‘The aim of this standard is to ensure that the approval testing of welders is performed under the same conditions and using the same types of test piece, irrespective of where such tests are held. By passing the test as specified here, a welder demonstratas that he is adequately qualified to be employed for the fusion ‘welding of steel in industry within the scope specified in this standard. The standard thus provides a basis for mutual recognition of welder approval test certificates by the badias responsible for the various fields of application. Examiners and examining bodies ‘This standard does not provide information on examiners and examining bodies involved in the approval testing of welders since these are indicated in the relevant legal regulations, spacialized standards, codes of practice, or technical delivery conditions. DIN EN 45013). Test certificates ‘This standard does not invalidate existing approval test certificates Issued on the basis of the 1992 edition of DIN EN 287-1. Its however recommended that, for a transitional period, such certificates be supplemented by the material designations and nomenclature as used in the present standard. On the expiry of these certificates, but not later than two years following publication of this standard, new certificates have to be issued, which may involve the welding of further test pieces by the welder concerned {since the scope of the new certificates differs ‘somewhat from those iseued hitherto on the basis of DIN EN 287-1). Job knowledge test Welders who apply for approval in Germany are required to take the job knowledge test detailed in Annex D. The quality of work involved in welding highly depends on the skill of the welder. The ability of the welder to follow verbal or written instructions and testing of his skill are therefore important factors in ensuring the quality of the welded product. Testing of skill to this standard depends on welding procedures in which uniform rules and test conditions are compled with and standard test pieces are used. This standard applies to processes where the welder's skill has a significant influence on weld quality, ‘This standard is intended to provide a basis for the mutual recognition by examining bodies for approval relating to the welder's competence in the various fields of application. Tests shall be carried out in accordance with this standard unless more severe tests are specified in the relevant application standard. ‘The test may be used to approve either 4 welding procedure or a welder provided that all the relevant require ments (¢.g. test piece dimensions) are satisfied (see EN 288-3). ‘The welder’s skill and job knowledge continue to be approved only ifthe welder is involved in welding work with reasonable continuity within the range of approval All new approvals are to be in accordance with this standard from the date of its publication. However, this standard does not invalidate previous welder approvals made to former national standards or specifications, providing the intent of the technical requirements is satisfied and the previous approvals are relevant to the application and production work on which they are to be employed. ‘Also, where additional tests have to be carried out to make the approval technically equivalent, it is only necessary to carry out the additional tests on a test piece which should be prepared in accordance with this standard, Consideration of previous approvals to former national standards or specifications should be at the enquiry/ contracting stage and agreed between the contracting parties. 1 Scope This standard specifies essential requirements, ranges of approval, test conditions, acceptance requirements ‘and certification for the approval testing of the weider’s performance for the welding of steel. A recommended format for the certificate of approval testing is given in Annex B. During the approval test the welder should be required to show adequate practical experience and job knowledge (which need not be checked mandatorily) of the welding processes, materials and safety requirements for which he is to be approved; information on these aspects Is givan in Annex D. This standard is applicable when a welder approval test is required by the purchaser, by inspection authorities or by other organizations, This standard applies to the approval testing of waldars for the fusion welding of steel. The welding processes referred to inthis standard include those fusion welding processes which are designated ‘as manual or partly mechanized welding, This standard does not cover fully mechanized and automatic welding processes (see 5.2) ‘This standard covers approval testing of welders for work on semi-finished and finished products made from the wrought, forged or cast material grades listed in 5.4. ‘Tho certificate of approval testing is issued under the sole responsibilty of the examiner or examining body. 2 Normative references This European Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications, These normative references are cited at the appropriate placesin the text and the publications arelisted hereafter. General ‘The criteria specified in this clause shall be examined in order to identify the ability of the welder in these fields, Each criterion is considered to be a significant factor in approval testing. ‘The welder approval test shall be carried out on test pieces; itis independent of the type of construction. 5.2 Welding processes Welding processes are defined in ISO 857 and reference numbers of welding processes for symbolic represen- tation are listed in ISO 4063, This standard covers the following welding processes: 111 ~ metal-arc welding with covered electrode; 114 —flux-cored wire metal-are welding without gas shield; 121 - submerged are welding with wire electrode; 131 - metal-are inert gas welding (MIG welding); 135 ~ metal-arc active gas welding {MAG welding): 196 ~ flux-cored wire metal-arc welding with active gas shield: 137 ~ flux-cored wire metal-are welding with inert gas shields 141 — tungsten inert gas are welding (TIG welding); 15 - plasma arc welding: 911 - oxy-acetylene welding: Other fusion welding processes by agreement. 5.3 Joint types Test pieces shall be produced for butt welds (BW) and filet welds (FW) in plates (P) or pipes") (1) for approval tests in accordance with 7.2. 5.4 Material groups 5.4.1, General In order to minimize multiplication of technically identical tests, steels with similar metallurgical and welding characteristics are grouped for the purpose of a wolder approval test (see 5.4.2). When welding parent metals from two different groups which do not give approval to each other according to tables 4 and 5 (sae 6.4), an approval for the combination as a separate group is required. ‘When the filler metal is dissimilar to the parent metal group, an approval for that combination of parent metal group and fillar metal is required, except when permitted by tables 4 and 5. 5.4.2 Steel groups for parent metal 5.4.2.1 General For the comparison of steel groups for the approval of welders and welding procedure testing according to EN 288-3, see Annex A. 6.4.2.2 Group W 01 Low-carbon unalloyed (carbon-manganesa) steels and/or low alloyed steels. This group also includes fine- grained structural steel with a yiold strength, Ry < 360 N/mm2, 8.4.2.3 Group W 02 Chromium-molybdenum (GrMo) and/or chromium-molybdenum-vanadium (CrMoV} creep-resisting steels. 5.4.2.4 Group W 03 Normalized, quenched and tempered, thermomechanically treated fine-grained structural stee!s with a yield strength, R,, greater than 360 N/mm?, as well as similarly welded nickel steels with a nickel content of 2% to 5%. 5.4.2.5 Group W 04 Forritic or martensitic stainless steels with a chromium content of 12% to 20%. 6.4.2.8 Group W 11 Stainless ferritic-austenitic and austenitic stainless chromium-nickal (CrNi) steels. 5.5 Consumables 5.5.1 General Itis assumed that in most approval tests the filer metal wll be similar to the parent metal. When a welder approval test has been cartiod out using a filler metal, shielding gas or flux suitable for that material group, this test will confer approval on the welder to use any other similar consumables ifiller metal, shielding gas or flux) for the same material group. 5.5.2 Metel-arc welding with covered electrodes Covered electrode groups are classified with respect to the most important characteristics according to -B basic covering; =C cellulosic covering: = ttile covering: = RA tutile-acid covering; = RB tuile-basic covering: = RC tutile-cellulosic covering: = RR tulle thick covering: -S others. NOTE: For further details on covered electrodes, roference should be made to EN 499, ISO 3580 or ISO 3561 according to the steel in question). 6.6 Dimensions ‘The welder approval test should be basad on the thickness of the material (.e. plate thickness or wall thickness of pipe] and pipe diameters which the welder will use in production. A testis listed for each of the three ranges of plate thickness and pipe wall thickness or pipe diameter as specified in tables 1 and 2. Angles of slope and rotation for straight welds in the welding positions shall be in accordance with 180 6947. The positions and angles usedin the approval test shali be based on the same tolerances as used in production, 6 Range of approval for welder 6.1 General ‘As a general rule, the test piece approves the welder nat only for the conditions used in the test, but also for all joints which are considered easier to weld. The range of approval for each type of test is given in the relevant ‘Subciauses and tables. In these tables, the range of approval is indicated in the same line, 6.2 Welding process Normally, each test approves one process. A change of process requires a new approval test. However, itis possible for a welder to be approved for more than one welding process by a single test or by two separate tests to be used to cover a multi-process joint. For example, in a case where approval is required for a single-side butt joint with the root to be welded by TIG (141) without backing and to be filled by metal-are welding with covered electrode (111), the welder may be approved by either of the following routes: a) successful completion of an approval test simulating the multi-process joint, i.e. the root run welded by TIG (141) without backing, subsequent runs or layers welded by metal-arc welding with covered electrode (111) within the limits of the range of approval for the particular welding process; 'b) successful completion of separate relevant approval tests, one for TIG (141) without backing for the root run end a separate test forthe fll by metal-arc welding with covered electrode (111) with backing or welded from both sides with or without gouging. 6.3. A full explanation of these imperfections is given in EN 26520. The acceptance requirements for imperfections found by test methods as described in this standard shall, unless otherwise specified, be as- ‘sessed in accordance with EN 25817. A welder is approved ifthe imperfections in the test lege are within the pecifiod limits of evel B in EN 25817, except for the following impertection types: excass weld metal, exces- sive convexity, excess throat thickness and excessive penetration, for which level C shall apply. IF tho imperfections in the welder’ test piece exceed the permitted maximum specified, then the welder shall not be approved. Reference should also be made to the corresponding acceptance criteria for non-destructive testing. Period of validity 10.1. Initial approval ‘The validity of the welder’s approval begins trom the date when all the required tests have been satisfactorily completed. This date may be different from the date of issue marked on the certificat ‘Awelder’s approval shall remain valid for @ period of two years providing thatthe relevant certificate is signed 2t six month intervais by the employer/coordinator and that all the following Concitions are fuliled: 2) The welder shall be engaged with reasonable continuity on welding work within the current range of approval. An interruption for a period no longer than six months is permitted ) The welder's work shall be in general accordance with the technical conditions under which the approval test was carried out. ©) There shell be no specific reason to question the welder's skill and knowledge. {f any of these conditions are not fulfiled, the approval shall be cancelled, 10.2 Prolongation ‘Tho validity of the approval on the certificate may be prolonged for further two year periods within the original range of approval, provided each of the following conditions according to 40.1 is fulfiled ~ the production welds made by the welder are of the required quality; ~ records of tests (e. g. documentation updated twice a year about X-ray or ultrasonic inapections or test reports about fracture tests carried out) shall be kept on file together with the welder's approval cartificate, ‘The examiner or examining body shal verify compliance with the above conditions and sign the prolongation of the welder approval test certificate. 11 Certification Ht shall be certified that the welder has successfully passed the performance approval test. All relevant test Cconditions shall be recorded on the certificate. Ifthe welder falls any of the prescribed teste, no certificate shall be issued. ‘The certificate shall beissued under the sole responsi all the information detailed in Annex B. The form shows approval test certificate. Ifany other form of welder approval test certificate is used, it shall contain the information required in Annex B. ‘The manufacturer's WPS as shown in Annex C shall give information about materials, welding positions, processes and range of approval etc., in accordance with this standard. The certificate shall be issued in at least one of the official CEN languages (English, French and German).
