Brazilian Standards, the content of which is the responsibility of the Brazilian Committees (ABNT/CB), the
Sectorial Standardization Organisms (ABNT/ONS) and the Special Study Commissions (ABNT/CEE), are
prepared by Study Commissions (CE), formed by the parties interested in the theme object of
standardization.
ABNT Technical Documents are prepared according to the rules of ABNT Directive 2.
AABNT draws attention to the fact that, despite having been requested to comment on possible
rights of patentsduring the National Consultation, these may occur and must be communicated to
ABNT at any time (Law No. 9,279, of May 14, 1996).
ABNT Technical Documents, as well as International Standards (ISO and IEC), are voluntary and do
not include contractual, legal or statutory requirements. ABNT Technical Documents do not replace
Laws, Decrees or Regulations, which users must comply with, taking precedence over any ABNT
Technical Document.

4 General requirements
4.1Classification
4.1.1For the purposes of this Standard, products with a nominal diameter are classified as bars.
6.3 mm or greater, obtained exclusively by hot rolling without a subsequent process of mechanical
deformation. Wires are those with a nominal diameter of 10.0 mm or less, obtained from wire rod by
drawing or cold rolling.
4.1.2According to the characteristic value of yield strength, steel bars are classified in categories
CA-25 and CA-50, and steel wires in category CA-60.
The steel bars and wires must be homogeneous in terms of their geometric characteristics, as
established in 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3 and 6.6.
4.2.1.1CA-50 category bars must be provided with oblique transverse ribs, as exemplified in Figure
A.1.
4.2.1.2The axes of the oblique transverse ribs must form, with the direction of the axis of the bar, an
angle between 45° and 75°.
4.2.1.3The bars must have at least two longitudinal ribs, continuous and diametrically opposed, that
prevent the bar from turning inside the concrete.
4.2.1.4For nominal diameters greater than or equal to 10.0 mm, the average height of the oblique transverse
ribs must be equal to or greater than 4% of the nominal diameter, and for nominal diameters less than 10.0
Copy for exclusive use - SOUTH SERVICE TRADING SA - 93.101.632/0001-22 (Order 847422 Printed: 10/11/2022)
4.2.1.5The average spacing of oblique transverse ribs, measured along the same generatrix, must
be between 50% and 80% of the nominal diameter.
4.2.1.6The projection of the oblique transverse ribs in the cross section must cover at least 85% of
the nominal perimeter of the cross section of the member.
4.2.1.7When the transverse rib touches the frieze/longitudinal rib, the requirement in 4.2.1.6 shall
be considered serviced.
NOTE The specifications of 4.2.1.1 to 4.2.1.6 are illustrated in the schematic drawing of Figure A.1.
4.2.1.8Other geometric configurations of ribbed bars other than the one exemplified in Figure A.1
may be used, provided they comply with the provisions of 4.2.1.1 to 4.2.1.3 and the minimum
surface conformation coefficient established in Table B.3.
4.2.1.9The surface conformation coefficient values for each diameter are determined through
laboratory tests, as described in 6.7.3, and must meet the minimum adherence parameters shown
in Table B.3.
4.2.2.2The fine series of CA-60 cited in Table B.2 must have the surface conformation coefficient
value adopted as equal to 1 (η = 1). The value of the surface conformation coefficient for the
medium and thick series of CA-60 mentioned in Table B.2 are determined through laboratory tests,
as described in 6.7.3, and must comply with what appears in Table B.3 .
The CA-25 category must have a smooth surface, devoid of any type of ribs. A value equal to 1 (η = 1)
must be adopted as the surface conformation coefficient for all diameters.
4.3 Defects
4.3.1Steel bars and wires intended for reinforced concrete reinforcement must be free of harmful
defects, such as: exfoliation (scales), corrosion, oil stains, section reduction and transverse cracks.
4.3.2Oxidation of the product can be accepted when it is superficial, without compromising its
geometric configuration.
NOTE The permissible degree of oxidation is characterized when, after its removal with a coarse cloth
or any brush, no evidence of corrosion is observed.
4.3.3In case of doubt as to the seriousness of the defects observed, the steel must be submitted to
tests to prove its mechanical properties.
The actual mass of bars and wires must be equal to their nominal linear mass, with the tolerances
indicated, respectively, in Tables B.1 and B.2.
NOTE For calculation purposes, the nominal linear mass of the bar or wire (in kilograms per meter) is
obtained by multiplying the nominal cross-sectional area in square meters by 7 850 kg/m3.
4.5.1The supply length of bars and straight wires must be 12 m and tolerance of ±0.7%.
4.5.2The supply of other lengths of bars and wires must be agreed between the supplier and the
consumer, provided that the tolerance is within±1 %.
4.6Marking
4.6.1The ribbed bars and the ribbed wires must be identified by means of rolling marks in relief,
clearly indicating the name and/or brand of the producer, the steel category and the respective
nominal diameter.
4.6.2The identification of flat bars of the CA-25 category must be done by means of a label indicating the
producer, the steel category and the respective nominal diameter.
4.7Supply conditions
4.7.1Bars and wires are supplied in pieces, bundles, rolls, spools or according to mutual agreement
between supplier and buyer, registered at the time of order.
4.7.2The product supplied in a bundle, reel or roll must have a label firmly affixed, containing at least the
following information engraved in a legible and indelible manner:
b) steel category;
4.7.3The product supplied in pieces, spools or bulk by the wholesale trade must have at least the
following information in its shipping or sales document:
a) steel category;
4.7.4The manufacturer must provide a quality certificate for each invoice with at least the following
information:

Le ratio, elongation (%) and result of bending tests,
h) invoice number;
m) other additional requirements, as long as they are agreed between the producer and the consumer, if necessary.
When ordering steel bars and wires for reinforced concrete, the buyer must indicate the following:
EXAMPLE Bundles of 3 t.

identifiable lots, whose maximum weight does not exceed 30 t.
6.4.1.2The rolls of each supply must be divided into approximately equal and perfectly identifiable
lots, whose maximum weight does not exceed 30 t.
6.4.1.3When there is no possibility of identifying the race, it is up to the person responsible for the inspection
to guide the formation of batches, whose masses do not exceed the values indicated in Table B.4.
6.4.2Formation of samples
It is up to the person responsible for the inspection to remove a sample from each batch, drawn randomly,
consisting of specimens with a length of at least 1.5 m, to identify it and send it to the laboratory for testing.
The number of copies must comply with the description in 6.4.3.1 and 6.4.3.2.
6.4.3.1Identified batches
6.4.3.1.1Identified batches are those in which it is possible to ensure their traceability to the
production.
6.4.3.1.2The representative sample of each lot identified is composed of three specimens. If the
sample does not meet the requirements specified in 7.1, a counterproof must be made, with the
representative sample of each lot consisting of six new specimens.
6.4.3.2unidentified batches
6.4.3.2.1Unidentified batches are those in which it is no longer possible to ensure their traceability
to production.
6.4.3.2.2The representative sample of each unidentified lot is composed of six specimens. If the
sample does not meet the requirements specified in 7.1, a counterproof must be made, with the
representative sample of each lot consisting of twelve new specimens.
6.5 Specimens
6.5.1It is up to the laboratory to receive the identified sample and prepare the specimens.
6.5.2In these test specimens, the determination of the actual mass must be made according to 4.4.
6.5.3The specimens for the tensile and bending tests must have adequate lengths to carry out these
tests, according to 6.7.1 and 6.7.2. The cross-sectional area of a bar or wire is assumed to be equal
Copy for exclusive use - SOUTH SERVICE TRADING SA - 93.101.632/0001-22 (Order 847422 Printed: 10/11/2022)
to that of a cylindrical bar having the same mass per unit length.
6.6.1CA-50 category ribbed bars shall comply with the specified in 4.2.1.
6.6.2The average spacing between oblique transverse ribs must be determined by dividing a length
occupied by ten continuous spaces of the specimen by 10. In determining the average spacing,
measurements must be taken from crest to crest from the first to the eleventh rib.
6.6.3The average height of the oblique transverse ribs must be determined by choosing ten non-
successive ribs on each side of the specimen. On each rib, three measurements must be taken, one
in the middle of the rib and the other two at one-quarter and three-quarters of the rib length.
6.6.4The measurements concerning the geometric configuration must be performed on the specimen of the
sample taken according to 6.4.2.
6.7 Tests
6.7.1tensile test
6.7.1.1The tensile test must be carried out in accordance with ABNT NBR ISO 6892-1 and ISO
15630-1. The initial length L0is equal to 10 nominal diameters, not being allowed the use of body of
test machined.
6.7.1.2The yield strength of steel bars and wires can be characterized by a step in the stress-strain
diagram or calculated by the stress value under load corresponding to a permanent deformation of
0.2%.
6.7.1.3The yield strength of steel bars and wires can also be calculated by the value of the stress
under load corresponding to a deformation of 0.5%. In case of divergence, the value obtained in
6.7.1.2 prevails.
6.7.3.1The surface conformation coefficient must be determined according to the ABNT NBR 7477.
6.7.3.2The results achieved in this test, for the CA-50, can be extended to similar geometric
configurations, with a tolerance in relation to the tested bar of 10% in the linear measurements and
in the angles of the ribs, according to the guidelines in 4.2.1.
This test, when requested by the buyer, must be carried out in accordance with ABNT NBR 7478.

less than the product ψ6×fy1, being ψ6 =0.92 with six copies and ψ12 =0.99 for samples with
12 specimens.
7.1.2If one or more of the requirements and test results referred to in 7.1.1 do not meet the
provisions of this Standard, a single countertest must be performed, with the new sample formed as
indicated in 6.4.3. If the results of the countertest fully comply with the provisions of 7.1.1, the batch
is approved.
7.1.3The adhesion test is the material characterization test, not being considered a reception test.
For the approval of each series and category of steel, the manufacturer must present the results of
this test, which are carried out periodically as described in 7.1.4.
NOTE The supplier has the right to monitor the sampling and counterproof tests.
7.1.4The manufacturer must carry out an adherence test for each series in its categories. This test
must be carried out every three years, alternating the diameters that make up each series and
category.
7.1.5Fatigue tests are not considered receiving tests and are performed only to characterize the
material steel.
