CVNG1002 Civil Engineering Design I 2022-2023

COURSEWORK 3

This coursework item is to be undertaken as a group exercise. It is worth 25 percent of the total mark
and the deliverable is to be submitted by 4:00pm of 31 March 2023 in the MyELearning submission
folder provided.

A company servicing the tourism sector wishes to invest in developing a luxury beach house. The house
is to be two-story and of plan dimensions 12.0 m wide by 18.0 m long with 4 columns in the long plan
direction of the house, and 3 in the short plan direction of the house. Each column is connected to a
beam in each plan direction.

Making any assumptions deemed suitable:

1. Provide sketches of layouts for: (a) a ground floor plan; (b) an upper floor plan; (c) a front
elevation also showing the roof, and (d) a side elevation also showing the roof. The ground floor
and upper floor plans must show the locations of the walls (if any). [15%]

2. Table 1 below shows the possible materials for each of the building sub-systems of the house,
along with the values for certain properties. Select one material for each sub-system based on a
systematic material selection procedure. The selection process shall be presented in a report (in
pdf format) with the following sections – introduction; house layouts; material selection
calculations including the evaluation and rating matrices, and conclusions. [Hint: If objective
values are not available, or it is not possible to compare results with desired values, use a
subjective rating].

Group Instructions

The following guidelines must be applied in carrying out the group activities. The group shall comprise the same
members as for Coursework No. 1.

• The groups shall elect a leader who shall be responsible for submitting the report on time. The report shall be a
zip file consisting of the report as a pdf file, and the layout drawings as pdfs of scaled pencil sketches using
suitable conventions. The plagiarism statement check-box shall be selected when submitting the file into the
MyELearning submission folder.
• All members are required to participate. Leaders shall report at the earliest opportunity any member who does
not participate.
• Components of the group work shall be assigned in an equitable manner.
