Lesson: Evaluation of Algebraic Expressions

Grade Level: Grade 7

Strand: Patterns and Algebra

Content Standard:

The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic expressions, the

properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.

Performance Standard:

The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and algebraic
methods in solving problems involving algebraic expressions, linear equations, and
inequalities in one variable.

Competencies Addressed:

The learner…

1. Evaluates algebraic expressions for given values of the variable;

2. Solves problems involving evaluation of algebraic expressions.

Objectives:

In this lesson, the students are expected to:

1. evaluate algebraic expressions for a given values of the variable;

2. create problems involving evaluation of algebraic expressions; and
3. relate concepts of evaluation of algebraic expressions to real-life situations.

Instructional Procedure:

A. Presentation of Problem

Waste Segregation and Recycling has been a part of the daily activity of the
students at San Nicolas National High School to raise students’ awareness of
environmental protection and the effect of climate change. In this connection, the
Supreme Student Government (SSG) launches a project titled, “Exchange Gift”
wherein every kilogram of waste materials earns points that can be exchange for
school supplies and grocery items. Plastic, which is the number one waste collected,
earns 5 points for every kilo and paper earns 8 points for every kilo.

Your task is to help the SSG Officers compute the total points earned of each
grade level. What grade level earned the most number of points?

B. Presentation of Answers for the Entry Activity

(Highlight valuing from students as to what they consider practical.)

 What is the importance of waste segregation and recycling?
 In what way are you able to help clean the environment by collecting these
waste materials?
 What items can be made out of these materials?
 If you are the SSG president, how can you minimize the occurrence of plastics
as the number one waste collected?

C. Processing of Answers:

(Process solution and answers of students leading to the concept of algebraic

expression)

 How many points did each grade level earned in paper waste materials? plastic
waste materials?
 How did you determine the total points of every grade level?
 How did you determine the total points of all grade levels?
 What mathematical concepts did you apply to help you determine the total
number of points each grade level earned?

D. Practice Exercises

Do what is required.

1. Imee is a student assistant at the Mathematics department. Since she is

hardworking and very pleasant to all, the head of the department decides to
give her an additional Php 50 every week on top of the Php 20 per hour rate.
a. If Imee works for 4 hours a day, how much does she receive in a week
(that is, 5 working days)?
b. How much will she receive a week if she works 3 hours a day? 5 hours
a day?
c. If x is the number of hours she works in a day, write an expression that
gives how much she could receive each week.
d. Identify the constant/s and variable/s in the expression.
E. Summary

 To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute the given value/s of the

variable/s. Then, simplify using GEMDAS.

F. Extension

Weekly Wages

Interview 5 cashiers in a grocery store and find out how much she is paid each
day for an 8-hr shift. Include also its extra hour and deduction if there is any.
Represent the gathered data using algebraic expressions and evaluate how much each
of these will receive for a week.
