Module 3: The Animal Cell

Delivery Date: second week

Time required: 3 hrs.

Learning objectives

At the end of the unit, the student should be able to:

1. describe the structures and functions of cells;
2. compare the various cell types;
3. differentiate the types of cellular divisions;
4. differentiate the ways by which molecules enter and leave the cells;
5. diagram how cells produce energy, the ATP;
6. explain the central dogma of molecular biology and
6. explain the cellular basis of some abnormalities.

Unit 3 – The Cell

1. Structures of the cell
2. Types of cells
3. Transport in Cells
4. Energy Production in Cells
5. Types of cell division
6. The Central Dogma of Cell and Molecular Biology
6. Cellular abnormalities

Elicit

Can you remember any idea about cells? Can you share please?

Engage

Don’t you know that if the cells of your body will not function well, you are suffering from certain
illness or you are experiencing abnormal life and even can lead to your death?

Answer please…….
1. Make a concept map showing the parts major parts of the generalized human cell, its
sub-parts, their descriptions and functions.
2. Paste photographs of various types of human cells and compare in terms of appearance and function.
3. Paste photographs of cells mitosis and meiosis with labels and descriptions undergoing mitosis and
meiosis. Compare the 2 types of cell divisions in terms of the kinds of cells where they occur, number
chromosomes present among daughter cells and importance.
4. Paste photographs with descriptions the ways by which molecules enter and leaves the cells.
Compare them in terms of energy requirements and the descriptions of the process.
5. Paste a diagram how cells produce the energy, the ATP, with descriptions. Take note the amount of
ATP produced per stage/phase.
6. Diagram the Central Dogma of Cell and Molecular Biology. Discuss its importance.
6. Explain the cellular basis of the development of cancer .
