A Semi detailed lesson plan in Earth and Life Science

I. Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1. Explain how cells carry out functions required for life
(S11LT-c-4)
II. Subject Matter
1. Bioenergetics (Reference: Harley & Miller: “General
Zoology” 10th edition”, 2013)
2. Materials
2.1 Laptop
2.2 LCD Projector
2.3 Video clips on animal cells
2.4 Activity Sheet ( Manila paper)
2.5 Marker
2.6 Masking tape

III. Procedure
1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
3. Review of the previous lesson: Animal cell anatomy
4. Motivation: Video Clip presentation on cell ( Video Clip
Presentation using Movie Maker: In this video clip, it
contain the cell with its inner structures that work for
its functions for life to exist. Source: www.Free
Science Lecture.com)
After viewing ask the learners relating to the video:
4.1 How do parts of cell move?
4.2 Why parts of cell move?
4.3 What make the parts of cell move?
5. Activity:
The learners will be grouped into five. Each
group will analyze the video presented in
motivation. Then, they are going to name the
structures that contribute the life processes of the
cell. Using the activity sheet, the group will identify
the parts of the cell that perform the functions.
Presentation of outputs will follow. Using of rubrics
each group will be graded.

6. Analysis: lecture and discussion of the content using

the PowerPoint Presentation.
6.1 Discuss the functions of the following structures of
the animal cell:
6.1.1 Plasma membrane
6.1.2 Cytoplasm
6.1.3 Organelles
 Mitochondrion
 Endoplasmic Reticulum
 Centrioles
 Lysosomes
 Golgi apparatus with its vesicles
 ribosomes
 cytoskeleton
6.1 d. Nucleus

7. Abstraction
How do cells carry out functions required for life?
The learners are expected to explain that
each kind of cell is structured to perform a highly-
specialized function. For instance, the RER with
the ribosomes has the specialized function for
protein synthesis. And various organelles acted
together to allow the cell carry out its many
functions. Hence, if one cell will not carry its
function, the entire body will be affected and this
may lead to illness or death.

8. Application
8.1 When you have cuts/wound, a poor healing
process is observed. Which cell structure is
responsible for that problem?
The learners are expected to explain that
there are three phases in cuts/wound healing:
inflammatory, proliferation, and remodeling.
These phases will not be observed if cells
cannot carry out its function, specifically the
malfunction of RER with ribosomes. Because
RER with ribosomes functions for protein
synthesis which will be used in three phases of
cuts/wound healing.

8.2 If fainting is often observed to a person, which

cell structure is not functioning well?
The learners will explain that the cells of a person
who is fainting have experienced insufficient of
oxygen. When the amount of sugar in the blood is
lowered. Therefore, blood cells have no energy and
they cannot carry oxygen and distribute it to the
different parts of the body, particularly in brain
cells, resulting to fainting or collapse.
Mitochondrion is one of the primary structures in
the cell that is responsible in breaking sugar into a
chemical energy for the cells can carry out its
function.

IV. Evaluation
1. Quiz – Essay (15 pts.)
1. Explain the functions of the following parts of the
cell: (2 pts. each)
A. Ribosomes
B. Mitochondrion
C. Golgi apparatus
D. Endoplasmic reticulum
E. Lysosome
2. How do cell structures carry out functions required
for life?
(5pts.)
V. Assignment

1. Study the plant cell structure & functions.

1. A compare and contrast between plant and
animal cell functions.
